INDIANAPOLIS ? Here's why Michigan left offensive tackle Jake Long is the top prospect at his position:
He was flagged for only two penalties and yielded only two sacks in his four-year career.

"I gave up one sack this year," he said Thursday, Feb. 21, at the NFL Scouting Combine. "It was (against) Vernon Gholston of Ohio State. I take it personally. I wanted to make sure that I was perfect and not let up a sack, but Vernon's a great player and he had a good move on me."

Gholston, Long high on many lists

Some of the finest four-legged thoroughbred stock in the world are measured, scrutinized and sold at Keeneland, outside Lexington. Everyone there is looking for the next Secretariat. The best in artwork goes on the sales block at Christie's in London. Nervous bidders hope they will invest in the creations of this generation's Picasso or Rembrandt. At Barrett-Jackson auction house in Scottsdale, rare and highly-coveted sports cars find their way in front of potential buyers, who write checks with a half dozen zeroes for something that is fast and flashy. And in Indianapolis this weekend, circumferentially-challenged middle-aged men wearing those odd, half-frame glasses and carrying clip boards will analyze, prod and attempt to peer into the DNA of the best college football players in the country. There are X-rays to detect any unmended injuries, and the obligatory drug testing. The NFL Scouting Combine is a highly-sophisticated meat market where likely future pro players are assessed and a pecking order is established for the upcoming NFL draft, which takes place on the final weekend of April. This beauty contest for 300-pounders has a commonality with Keeneland and Christie's and Barrett-Jackson in the price tag for its prime talent - millions.

Major buzz

The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to draft a defensive lineman with the No. 9 overall pick, and they could lose up to four starters though free agency. Coach Marvin Lewis seemed comfortable with that turnover. The Bengals continue to negotiate with defensive end Justin Smith, linebacker Landon Johnson and safety Madieu Williams, but Lewis said any deal will be on the team's terms. "It may be the case where they need to go out and see what the market is for their services," he said, adding with a smile, "We're going into free agency just like they are."
Minor buzz

Atlanta won a three-way coin flip for the No. 3 overall pick. Oakland will pick fourth and Kansas City fifth. ... Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan attracted the biggest crowd of reporters and handled it with aplomb, as Michigan tackle Jake Long did the day before. ... The prevailing opinion is that this draft is top-heavy with tackles and running backs, and there will be significant talent available at each position through the third round. ... As Brett Favre again ponders whether to retire, Packers general manager Ted Thompson said he will not push his star quarterback for a decision. "He, more than probably anybody I've been around, has earned that right to decide," Thompson said.

Leg injury causes concern about LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey at NFL Scouting Combine

Indianapolis- The buzz at the NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday was LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, rated one of the top five players in the NFL draft, might be a medical risk because of a stress fracture in his right tibia.
An NFL team doctor told NFLDraftScout.com that there are serious concerns about the lingering effects of the fracture, suffered in 2006 during his junior season.
Dorsey underwent a physical Saturday at the combine, then was sent to a nearby hospital for more tests. Dorsey said he's not working out at the combine because his conditioning was set back by the death of his grandmother.

The team doctor told NFLDraftScout.com the stress fracture is in an area of the tibia that's difficult to heal.
"I'm not sure how the test came out," Dorsey said Sunday after the story broke. "I haven't spoken to anyone about it. Not at all. I played my whole junior year with it. It's not a big issue. It just calcified on my leg and I had a knot on it."

Draft's D-line offers depth
Pick may tip Bengals' defensive plan

INDIANAPOLIS - Depending on whom they select with the ninth pick in the draft, the Bengals could tip their hand about their defensive plans for the next few seasons.
Upgrading the defensive line is the top priority of the offseason, coach Marvin Lewis said, and if they don't re-sign defensive end Justin Smith in free agency, the Bengals almost assuredly will take a tackle or end. Lewis and Smith say Smith will give the Bengals every opportunity to re-sign him.
Lewis wants to improve the pass rush. The Bengals' 22 sacks in 2007 gave them the NFL's worst sack-per-play rate.

But what kind of lineman would they pick?
Would it be a true nose tackle to challenge Domata Peko if the Bengals switch to a three-lineman scheme?
Would it be another tackle to play alongside Peko in the standard 4-3, with undersized veteran tackle John Thornton moving outside to play end?
Would it be the rare, true 275-pound end, similar to Smith?
Or would it be another hybrid end/outside linebacker, the likes of Eric Henderson and Rashad Jeanty?

According to one of our sources, who spoke with several insiders after the Combine, former Ohio State linebacker Larry Grant surprised many scouts with his overall athletic ability and might have, ultimately, secured a spot in the middle rounds of the draft....N.F.L. teams already liked his special teams production at Ohio State, but his performance in the agility drills (3-cone and 20-yd shuttle) and 4.71 40 at 235 pounds in Indianapolis last weekend has really forced many teams to take a closer look at him.
