I thought I'd start a separate thread to track and acknowledge the Ohio State students and alumni who will be competing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Ohio State has produced well over a hundred Olympic athletes who have won over 70 medals. Were Ohio State University a country, it would rank among the all time top 30 for both overall medals and Gold medals.

To start the thread, Ohio State alumnus Hanna Thompson earned a spot as one of the three women fencers to represent the US in Beijing.

I think the U.S. will have nine women fencers in Beijing. She is one of three on the foil squad, there are three also in Epee and Saber. The article wasn't written very well.

OSU fencing will probably have a half dozen current / former buckeyes at the olympics fencing for different countries.

I caught the men's gymnastics qualifications at just the right time to see Raj Bhavsar on the rings... I'm by no means a follower of gymnastics but he seemed to have done well. The commentators kept mentioning how the US started their qualifications off on a bad foot and that Raj's routine was a very good one to turn things around. Good to see him make the most of his chances.

BTW, the men's team did qualify for the finals. They most likely won't catch China or Japan but they do have an outside shot at a bronze medal if they perform well.

Here's a link to all the Ohio State students and alums in Beijing. The breakdown is 15 athletes (not counting the Hamm brothers who withdrew) and one coach representing 7 countries in 11 sports.

Michigan, by the way, only has 9 athletes in Beijing; although Michael Phelps will definitely skew the medal count their way.

He attended scUM (studied sports marketing and management for four years) while swimming for a USA Swimming club team affiliated with scUM...the only reason why he didnt swim on the university team was because he had already shot his amatuer status by accepting endorsement money from his sponsors (Speedo, Visa, Omega and PowerBar). So, although he didn't swim on the university team, he attended the school, swam for club affiliated with the university, and trained nearly exclusively at their facilities. He's a scummer in my mind.

I think you missed a couple... I counted 6 total: 2 golds (Michael Redd and Katie Smith), 2 silver (Jason Rodgers and Hanna Thompson, both in fencing), and 2 bronze (Raj Bhavsar in team gymnastics and Bryan Volpenhein in rowing).
