Linebackers don’t want to hurt draft status

Two of Ohio State’s highest-rated NFL draft prospects that have been invited to the Senior Bowl might not play in the game.
Linebackers A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter said Wednesday that they are weighing their options and might not decide what they’re doing until a few days before the Jan. 28 game.

Their reasons for hesitation are slightly different, but it boils down to this: They might not need to showcase themselves in the game in order to be a high draft pick.

Carpenter is still healing from a broken bone in his lower right leg suffered against Michigan on Nov. 20. He sat out the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2.

He said he is not yet 100 percent.

"The risk of reinjury at this point is pretty minimal," he said. "The fracture is pretty well healed. I’m going to get another X-ray next week to make sure it’s solid in there, but it feels pretty good. There’s just some soft-tissue stuff I’m trying to take care of."

The issue with the Senior Bowl, as it was in his decision not to play in the Fiesta, has to do with how well he could play.

"If I don’t feel like I can go down there (to Mobile, Ala.) and perform, I’m not going to play," Carpenter said. "(The Senior Bowl) is something that can help me, but it can hurt me a little bit if I don’t play well.

"That’s something I’m going to have to determine Wednesday or Thursday of that week, maybe later, depending on how it’s feeling."

He is confident his performance at Ohio State the past four years, plus his workouts at the NFL combine beginning Feb. 21, will serve him well.

Carpenter is projected as a secondround draft pick with the potential to move up into the first round.

"Part of the advantage of being at Ohio State is playing against top-notch competition every week," he said. "I’ve got good film against good competition."

Hawk has no injury concerns, but his bottom line is the same. Projected as a likely top-10 pick, his stock might not be helped by playing in the game.

Last year, 83 Senior Bowl participants were drafted, but only 10 of 32 first-round picks played in the game.

"I don’t know if I’m playing yet, I haven’t made up my mind," Hawk said.

"They said I could wait up until the last minute. I just listen to whatever people say. I don’t really know how it all works, so I just talk to the people that I need to to see if I should play or not."

Center Nick Mangold plans to play in the Senior Bowl.

Other Buckeyes in all-star games are defensive end Mike Kudla (Hula Bowl, Jan. 21) and safety Nate Salley, offensive lineman Rob Sims, kicker Josh Huston and linebacker Anthony Schlegel (East-West Shrine Game, Jan. 21).
Ohio State has several players who could use the games to improve their draft standing, including Schlegel.

"Any time you get to go against the best and if you can prove yourself there, that always just helps you out," he said.
The draft will take place April 29-30. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

You know, frankly I think the end of senior season bowls ought to be thought of as something more than simply a chance to showcase oneself for the pros. In the old days they were. Best example was the East-West Shrine, which seems to have fallen from grace somewhat in more recent years. The game helped kids in need and in additional it was an honor to be selected. I'm not sure of the charitable tie-ins that may exist for the other current games, but I bet there are some. Not to mention representing ones' school for the last time.

To me these games are like the Pro Bowl. Who "needs" to play in the Pro Bowl? Virtually no one really. It is a thing of recognition and honor. Too bad that the senior games are not regarded as that sort of thing anymore, apparently.

Go Bucks!

Buckeyes on TV

Four players will represent OSU in the East-West Shrine Game in San Antonio on Saturday, but defensive end Mike Kudla decided not to play in the Hula Bowl on Saturday with no reason given.

Offensive lineman Rob Sims, linebacker Anthony Schlegel, kicker Josh Huston and safety Nate Salley will play for the East in the Shrine Game, set for a 4 p.m. kickoff (ESPN2). Also on the East are Ohio University cornerback Dion Byrum and Toledo quarterback Bruce Gradkowski.
Three Buckeyes have been invited to the Senior Bowl on Jan. 28. Center Nick Mangold will take part. Linebackers A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter have not decided whether to play.

Maybe the mindset of these players are the fear that they may get hurt knowing already that from NFL news sources, they are aware of thier position in the draft, even before the scouting bowls are played. Thats all they are anymore. Like RLC 65 said. Its not for regcognition anymore like it use to be.

Even though I understand why Carp and Hawk are thinking about not playing in the Senior Bowl. I hope they do for selfish reasons. I have tickets to the game sitting 3 rows up on the 40 yard line on the north team sideline. I have not got to see them play live since the northwestern game in 03.

Yeah, Hawk and Carp have no business playing in this game. With Bush, Leinart, and Young penciled into the top-3, Hawk's draft status cannot be any higher. Anything he does between now and the draft could only take money off the table or keep it the same.

Carpenter - I imagine he could help his draft status some, but Kiper is projecting him as a first-rounder, and that's with the injury. Really, he is best served by taking the full amount of time between now and the draft healing and rehabbing, so that teams will know that he'll be completely ready for camp. Besides, Carp will make way more money with a good combine performance than with an all-star game performance.

Good luck to all of these guys

Im sad to see Kudla will not be playing. Would have been fun to know somebody playing on the same defense as a Buckeye player, a freakisly strong buckeye player at that.

It looks like Kudla is banking on a great combine performance to move him up in the draft, this game would not have moved him up much. Obvioulsy, we all know that Kudla will most likely perform well at the combine, so its a good move on his part not to play.

I really don't see a problem with any of these guys skipping out. With the rules the way they are with these all-star games, i.e. no blitzing, it really doesn't help Hawk, Carp, or Kudla to go. Because it doesn't showcase what they can do in a real defense, just whether or not they're capable of in a base cover 2.
