    Northern Iowa Preview

The Panthers began the year with 7 straight victories, sweeping a two game series vs Arkansas-Little Rock, a four game series vs Centenary, and taking the first game vs New Mexico State before losing the last two to the Aggies by scores of 37-11 (!) and 13-3. 37-11?! That's got to be a misprint...

we hung 35 on Toledo at the same touney a few years ago....the air is pretty light out there.

    N. Iowa has a nice 7-2 record, but i think Bethune Cookman may be the best team we will see this weekend...thats not saying a lot. 3 of 4 should be no problem this weekend.

Why not 4 out of 4.

It appears that there is no gametracker or live stats for this weekend so we will have to sweat these games out...

I want to sweep, but i like to aim low! I'm not sure if we have enough pitching to win em all. This weekend will give us a real good idea on just how much pitching depth we actually have. ...and that is why i am really interested in these 4 games.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ohio State pounded out 22 hits for the second straight game on its way to a 17-10 victory over Lehigh Friday in the first game of a doubleheader at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium, the former spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Seven Buckeye starters had multiple hits to score three runs in the second, five in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Ohio State got things start in the second with three straight hits, including a lead-off double by J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion). He went to third on a single to left by Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) and scored when leftfielder David Moscow did not field the ball cleanly. A single by Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) put runners at first and second. A single by Jacob Howell (Jr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) loaded the bases. Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) was hit by a pitch for the second run before a sacrifice fly by Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) gave Ohio State a 3-0 lead.
Lehigh responded with three runs of its own to tie the game in the top of the third.
Ohio State built an 8-3 lead with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Schirtzinger drove in the go-ahead run with a single and Angle plated two more with a single to left-center field. Two more runners scored on a double to the left-field corner by Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South).

Howell gave the Buckeyes a seven-run lead, 10-3, with a two-run single with two out in the bottom of the fourth. Shuck, who drew a walk to lead off the inning, and Schirtzinger, who beat out a bunt for a single, scored on Howell's hit to left-center field.
Lehigh scored four times in the fifth inning to pull within a 10-7 score, thanks to a two-run home run by Matt McBride and a two-run single by Jeff Benfield. The Buckeyes got the run back though in the bottom of the inning when designated hitter Adam Schneider (Jr., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) singled to left to score Bourquin, who had his third hit - and second single - of the game.
The Buckeyes used five hits to score four runs in the sixth inning and build a 15-8 lead. Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) gave the Buckeyes runners at second and third after a double down the left-field line, his first hit of the game. Howell followed with a double to right to score both runs. A single by Angle scored Howell from second and then Schneider singled through the left side to score Angle as the fifth run of the inning.
Schirtzinger led the Buckeyes with four hits and scored five runs, while Howell and Stephen each had three hits. Angle, Schneider and Shuck each had two, while Fryer and Zoeller collected one hit to give every Buckeye starter a hit in the game. The Buckeyes had to overcome a season-high six errors.
Starter Cory Luebke (So., Maria Stein, Ohio/Marion Local) got the win for Ohio State. He pitched 5.2 innings and gave up eight runs, though only three were earned, on 11 hits to improve his record to 2-1. Kyle Collina (1-1) took the loss for Lehigh, which had 15 hits and two errors of its own.
Ohio State (3-4) and Lehigh (5-6) will play the second game of the doubleheader, a seven-inning game, Friday immediately after game one. The Buckeyes' next game will be against Northern Iowa, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. followed with a game vs. Bethune-Cookman Sunday at 1 p.m.

Glad we won, but i'm not too happy with what went down today. The runs were nice, but the pitching and defense left a lot to be desired... I guess the glass is half empty for me!

Off topic a bit...Jay Buente shut out Missouri. Purdue's ace now has wins over North Carolina, UL lafayette, and Mizzou. I think Purdue is the class of the league at this point...its still early though.

Jedidiah Stephen Gets Four Hits in 9-6 Victory vs. Northern Iowa

Fryer and Zoeller each homer as Buckeyes move above .500 for first time this year

    March 11, 2006

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ohio State shortstop Jedidiah Stephen was a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly to help fuel a 9-6 Buckeye victory over Northern Iowa at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium. With the win, Ohio State improved to 5-4, moving above the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Stephen had a pair of doubles to start the game before ending the game with sacrifice fly and two singles. His four hits were part of a 16-hit Buckeye attack. In the three games in Clearwater, Ohio State has scored 39 runs on 54 hits. Saturday against the Panthers, five other Buckeyes finished with two hits each.

Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) and Stephen, a senior from Caldwell, Ohio (Shenandoah) each drove in a run in the bottom of the first inning to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead. Jacob Howell (Jr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) led off the inning with a single through the right side and went to second when Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) beat out a bunt. Bourquin scored Howell with a single down the left-field line and then after a double play, Bourquin scored from first on Stephen's seventh double of the season. His added a double in the third.

In the second, it was more Ohio State as both runs scored thanks to a throwing error on UNI shortstop Brandon Douglas. With one out, Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Josh Hula (Fr., Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta) singled and then after a strikeout, Angle loaded the bases with an infield single. Then on what should have been the third out of the inning on routine grounder to shortstop by Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg), Douglas threw the ball wide of second base trying to nab Angle. The throw was wide and both Zoeller and Hula scored to extend the Buckeye lead to 4-0.

Northern Iowa got two runs back to pull within a 4-2 score in the top of the third after an RBI single by Mark Frieske and an RBI double by Nate Trumm.

The Buckeyes came back with three runs in the bottom of the third getting an RBI single from Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) followed by a two-run home run by Zoeller. It was Ohio State's second home run of the season and gave the Buckeyes a 7-2 lead. The Buckeyes added another run in the fourth on Stephen's sacrifice fly to center field. In the sixth, Fryer launched the team's second home run of the game, sending a solo shot over the fence in left field to build a 9-2 lead.

The Panthers (7-4) finally started getting to OSU starter Dan DeLucia (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) in the top of the seventh. He did not walk a batter until the fifth and walked batters in the seventh and ninth. Jesse Oster started the inning with a double and scored on a single by Douglas. Douglas went to second on a wild pitch and reached third on a throwing error by Fryer, the Buckeye catcher. He later scored on a Frieske single, the third hit of the inning. He got out of further damage getting pinch hitter Jason Smith to line out to second base for an unassisted double play.

DeLucia pitched 8.2 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season (1-1). Rory Meister (So., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) got the final out of the game, but not before giving up a pair of hits, including a double to his first batter that scored the final two Northern Iowa runs. Taylor Sinclair took the loss for the Panthers to fall to 1-2.

Stephen batted in two runs, while Zoeller scored twice in a 2-for-4 day that produced two runs. Joining Zoeller with two hits were Howell, Angle, Schirtzinger and Hula. Frieske and Douglas each had two hits for Northern Iowa, which had 11 hits in the game. UNI had two errors to one by Ohio State.

The Buckeyes conclude their visit to Clearwater, Fla., vs. Bethune-Cookman Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium.

Matt Angle led the way for the Buckeyes and for the second straight Sunday was 5-for-6.

    Box Score
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ohio State freshmen pitchers Jake Hale and J.B. Shuck and sophomore closer Rory Meister combined to allow just six hits as the Buckeye offense pounded out 19 hits in a 9-1 Buckeye victory vs. Bethune-Cookman Sunday at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium.
Hale, a right-handed pitcher from Albany, Ohio (Alexander) was cruising along in his first career start until a collision with catcher Josh Hula (Fr., Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta) on a shallow pop up in the bottom of the fifth inning. He did not allow his first hit until two away in the third and allowed another in the fourth. Wildcat catcher Drew Clark led off the fifth with a double before Hale fielded the popup and ran into Hula, who was diving to make the grab. Hale walked his next batter and that drew a visit from head coach Bob Todd, who replaced him with Shuck, a left-hander from Galion, Ohio (Galion). That brought an early close for Hale (0-1), who was in line to get his first win as a Buckeye. He pitched 4.1 innings and did not allow a run on three hits. He struck out six, but walked four.
Shuck and Hale did not allow a run on five hits before Meister, a sophomore from Mansfield, Ohio (Mansfield Madison), allowed the first run by the Wildcats to score on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning. Shuck got the win to improve to 2-0 in his Buckeye career. He went 3.2 innings and allowed only two hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
The Buckeyes continued the weekend hit parade from the very start.
Jacob Howell (Jr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) led off the game with a double down the left field line and scored on a single through the right side by Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) to give Ohio State an early 1-0 lead.

    spacer.gif

Angle led off the third inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a wild pitch before Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) drew a walk. Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) came through with his eighth hit of the weekend, a single to left to score Angle. Adam Schneider (Jr., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) followed with a one-out sacrifice fly to score Fryer. And then after Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) drew a walk, Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) singled through the left side to score Bourquin and give the Buckeyes a 4-0 advantage.
The Buckeyes got another runner across the plate in the fourth inning to go up 5-0. Fryer scored Angle from first base with a single to the gap in left-center field. Angle reached on a one-out single to shallow left-center.
Angle came through with fourth straight hit of the game with one out in the sixth. He tripled to the gap in left-center field and then scored on a single to left by Fryer to extend the lead to 6-0.
Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) finally got his first hit to lead off the seventh inning. Stephen now has a hit in all 10 games this season and in the season-ending loss to St. John's last year in the NCAA Corvallis Regional to run his hit streak to 11 games, which ties his career best. The school record is 23 games set by Jay Semke in 1987. After moving to second on a base hit by Schneider, Stephen was nabbed at third on a fielder's choice. Hula dropped a ball into shallow centerfield to score Schneider before Tony Kennedy (So., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) was thrown out trying to reach second.
Two more runs scored in the top of the ninth inning to give Ohio State a 9-0 lead. Howell and Angle led off the inning with singles. Bourquin scored both runners with a single to left field.
Angle led the way for the Buckeyes and for the second straight Sunday was 5-for-6. Howell, Fryer, Bourquin, Schneider and Hula added two hits each. Collin Irvine and Drew Clark had two of Bethune-Cookman's six hits.
The Buckeyes finished the week 4-0 after a doubleheader sweep of Lehigh on Friday (17-10, 13-6), a win vs. Northern Iowa (9-6) and the 9-1 victory Sunday vs. Bethune-Cookman. In the four games Ohio State scored 48 runs on 73 hits.
Ohio State will return to action Sunday, March 19 when it meets Massachusetts to open its annual spring break trip at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The Buckeyes also will play a single game vs. Illinois-Chicago and two games against each Cornell and Vermont, March 19-24.
