BuckeyePlanet.com Mixtapes?

rocketman

flying low
This thought occured to me when I was browsing through some old cd's and found one labeled "Game Day." Turns out it was a cd I lost that we took to OSU games whenever we had some time to kill in the parking lots, so we let the 1000 watt subs pump out some bass. At school I'm an on-and-off DJ (house parties, frat parties, etc), and I figured if there was enough interest I can make some game day music for people to blast at their tailgate or whatnot.

Seeing as I'm uh...of color...I pretty much listen to nothing but rap and hip-hop, so this particular playlist is, well, very biased towards that...

EDIT: good lord! so I've rubbed some people the wrong way because, god forbid, a dj might have to actually play some popular shit every once in a while. Here's the playlist for the mixtape below:

#01] Alchemist & Big Twin - Different Worlds [3:29]
#02] Jean Grae - My Crew [3:17]
#03] Dilated Peoples - Love and War [2:55]
#04] KRS-One - Everyone Rise [1:36]
#05] Nicolay & Supastition - The Williams [3:33]
#06] Mobb Deep - Win or Lose [2:23]
#07] Jedi Mind Tricks - Blood Runs Cold (feat. Sean Price aka Ruck) [3:00]
#08] KRS-One - Still Spittin' [3:55]
#09] Talib Kweli - B.D.K. (feat. Black Thought & The Game) [2:22]
#10] Little Brother - On and On [3:17]
#11] Talib Kweli & HiTek - The Blast [2:03]
#12] Foreign Exchange - The Answer [3:28]
#13] Little Brother - Light It Up (Nicolay's Candlit Wonderland Remix) [2:05]
#14] Foreign Exchange - Raw Life [3:20]
#15] Nas - Reason feat. Emily [3:25]
#16] The Game - Where I'm From feat. Nate Dogg [2:27]
#17] Dilated Peoples - Right and Exact [2:30]
#18] Jadakiss - Shoot Outs feat. Styles P. [2:58]
#19] Alchemist - Bang Out feat. B-Real of Cypress Hill [2:26]
#20] Lloyd Banks - South Side Story [3:09]
#21] Nas - Book of Rhymes [3:28]
#22] Nas - Just a Moment feat. Quan [4:11]

These mixtapes won't be limited only to rap (although they'd probably sound cooler). I guess just gimme what you want to listen to and I can mix em up together into a seamless cd.

I've made tons of hip-hop mixtapes in my spare time. Here's one that was lucky enough to be put on a server:

DJ Rocket - Liquid Mix Vol. 1

Download the *.cue file here, so you can burn the 1 large mp3 onto a track-separated cd. This one in particular is full of underground artists, so if you're interested in that, you won't be dissapointed.

50 Cent? The Game? Lloyd Banks? Trick Daddy? Fabolous (I thought you spelled it fabulous.)? Lil' Jon? Please. I prefer not to listen to a song about cars, hoes, being a "pimp", and 20 inch rims when I'm getting ready to watch a football game.
I'd take Immortal Technique or Eric B. & Rakim over them anyday.

Download my mixtape and you'll get a taste of what I truly enjoy listening to. Don't get me wrong man, I'm a hip-hop junkie at heart. Problem is you can't get people on the dance floor with Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, Hieroglyphics, or even Talib, Mos Def, or Common. So I made a mix of more "popular" stuff to bang out on and get pumped up with.

I'm uh...of color...

For some reason I found that very funny.

One thing I have noticed with nearly every DJ I know, whether they do it professionally or just spin from time to time, is that they start out wanting to play all this great stuff that isn't real popular, and in the end they find out that they have to play stuff that everyone will have heard and that people can all get rowdy about. . .

I love making mix tapes-mostly getting stuff off Kazaa...shhhhh....

The point about DJs being forced to conform to standard tastes is both true and sad. I was at a buddy's wedding a couple of weeks ago and was about ready to puke-from either 15 beers and wedding cake combined, or the horrible music being played-and told some of my other friends that if I ever get married the only things played at my wedding will be Sublime, Sepultra, NWA, and the Grateful Dead....

Well, Im uh...old, so I'm have no clue who most of those people are. I think I've heard of the Eminem. Isn't that the band that hates their mothers? I tell you what, put together a cd with some Lovin Spoonful and some Neil Diamond and I'll be all over it. Oh, and some Johnny Cash and lou Rawls (sp?) would be nice. Oh, and get the funk out, put some Commodores on it. Dammit, now I'm going to be forced to pull all of my old 45's out. They're in the back of the damn closet. Do you know how long it's going to take me to get them out? I should ding your uh....of color ass for this

So true...when I started dj'ing I was like, "Great! Now everyone can listen to good music, cause the popular stuff is crap!" Well, you'd be hard pressed to DJ a house party in which everyone wants to listen to underground stuff...especially when they're drunk. DJ's are forced to conform not because that is how the industry is setup, but because people are inherently stupid. Crappy pop music exists because there is a market of mindless sheep to buy it.

50's new cd(well a couple months ago) was hot. Scott Storch had some good beats and the song with Game at the end was awesome. Some of his shit is borderline, but that is for the girls. He has such a wide variety of audience that is what he has to do. He knows how to sell records.
