Buckeye Roster - Classmates in high school

JoJaBuckeye

First we take Michigan--then the whole world!
Anyone here go to school with someone who made the football roster?

I attended Cambridge High School from my freshman year to just into my senior year, one year ahead of Doug Donley. We knew each other by name but little more.

My recollection is that he was an all-around athlete known mostly for track and field. I was not a fan of football in those days, and I don't remember Cambridge being a formidable team. It was quite a big deal for the town when Woody came to recruit him. Next thing I know, there he is on the team...beefed up well beyond what had been his more gangly physique. I seem to remember his career was affected by a shoulder injury. He went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys.

I went to Columbus Eastmoor. In a study hall, I sat one chair away from Keith Griffin. Yes, the younger brother of Archie who played on the field that bore his own last name. He and I never even said hello to each other.

It wasn't because he was unfriendly. It's just that long haired wastes of human DNA and jocks did not generally talk to each other at Eastmoor. It's probably that way everywhere.

Keith Griffin doesn't count though, as he actually became a 'cane. There were a couple of Buckeye LB's that I went to school with though.

As a senior my locker was right next to Michael Kee's, a linebacker who had a door-slamming pick-6 against Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl back when the Cotton Bowl was considered a big deal. Michael was exceptionally friendly and would actually give the silent head nod once in awhile.

Byron Lee, teammate of Kee and later a Philadelphia Eagle was also at Eastmoor at the time. I saw him once on campus at OSU, but never saw him in the halls at Eastmoor. That might be due to the fact that I went to class more often when I was at OSU.

Bobby Carpenter was a year younger than I was, sat a row away from him during lunch and had some common acquaintances, but that was all...saw him quite a bit on campus and he said Hi every once in a while, but I don't think I ever spoke to him when I was in high school

Teamates with Nick Goings, Roland Steele and Greg Simpson. Of course Goings transferred to Pitt, Steele became an academic casulty and Simpson I don't think ever made to even the practice field because of grades.

my best friend in high school had a great uncle named Wilmer Isabell. When I met him in 1972 he was about 75 years old but he still held (at that time) the longest punt record for Ohio Stadium. And that year he went to a game where they honored the 1922 team (first to play in the shoe).

Problem was, he played at a time when there were no helmets or simply little leather things, played at OSU and also some semi-pro, and he had dementia which his family swore was from hitting players and goal posts (which used to be right ON the line of scrimmage) with his head.

I remember I looked it up once, he played in 1922, maybe for a couple of years.

Tom Atha was a couple years behind me at Worthington. Hmmm... that's about it.

Go Buckeyes!

I don't know anyone that went to OSU for football, but Cory Partridge (the guy who caught the TD pass for BG against us) graduated from Loveland My Freshman year. His mom was my 7th grade science teacher and forensics teacher last year.

My brother knew Matt Sylvester in grade school (Matt ended up going to Moeller and my brother went to Loveland for high school)
