Buckeye Offensive Line - 2004 (official thread)

I think both Schafer and Barton will see a lot of PT at RT. I was a little disappointed that Barton may sit out of contact drills due to injury. I know he was coming along faster than expected last year and I was hoping to see how he compares this spring.

This is what Bollman and Tressel have preferred all along. We'll see how it actually turns out. I will say, it will be nice to pull a guard that can get 5-10 yards downfield for once. Or throw a bubble screen to Teddy or Santonio where the OL actually blocks someone outside the box. It's going to be a rough go for the OL in the first couple games. Hopefully we can get through a few without major mistakes. They should be fine by Big Ten season.

The offensive line is the area that I am most anxious to see. I love the fact that we have slimmed down along the front lines. I would much rather see slimmer, quicker guards getting to the 2nd and 3rd level throwing that extra block so Ross can cut back and break one. I think that is the way that our offensive line is progressing. The Denver Broncos use this philosophy quite well (leaner, quicker lineman), I think that it is a fantastic formula.

Expert O-line Opinions?

I have been critical of our O-line the past 2 years, and until I heard a comment from Pete Johnson, I haven't heard much from any real experts regarding the O-line.

I know what most of us think, but has it been confirmed from guys in the know? What does a guy like Earle Bruce say? I'm sure there are some ex-coach media guys willing to put in their $0.02 worth.

I'm just curious and hoping it is becuase our guys on O-line aren't that good, but I'm beginning to think it has more to do with coaching than talent.

Anybody?

HH had some good insight last week but didn't go too deep into it...

I'm starting to agree its a scheme problem but then again the scheme may be designed due to lack of personnel.

Like it or not, the cupboard is presently close to bare on the OL. We have a former walk-on starting...don't get me wrong, Mike Kne is a tough kid, but that is telling at a school like tOSU

ExHawg is never online on the weekends but Id love to hear his evaluation

They're tough kids, but as my father-in-law who played college OL and I have both noticed, they have some of the crappiest footwork we've ever seen, particularly on pass blocking. They really don't seem to pull very well either. Seems like a technique problem to me, and they all seem to have it to varying degrees.

I think the main problems are two fold, lousy coaching, and lousy scheme. If we are using this scheme due to lack of personel , what does that say for the OL recruiting of Tressel and Bollman? If the cupboard is bare then the blame should fall directly on those 2. I do agree that the talent just doesnt seem to be up to where it needs to be to field a competitive offensive line.

Well it can be argued that OL recruiting is the biggest crapshoot in the recruiting game. Coop didn't leave much so say they are getting 1-3 quality OL each year...the cupboard is just now getting stocked but those guys are still pups. last year's class was good for OL and this upcoming class is shaping up well...but still, those are young guys coming to a new level

I agree OL recruiting is a crapshoot, but the major thing that worries me is the fact that we seem to miss ALOT more then we hit. Granted these guys are young, but the fact that we have a former walk on starting , as you eluded to earlier, and we have 2 other walk ons in the 2 deep is extremely worriesome.
