Buckeye Defensive Line - 2005 (official thread)

Just because you don't have Will Smith doesn't mean this defense cannot end up better than 2002's. My point is I really don't care if the DE's are not getting as many sacks because other positions are making up for it. If we sack VY 3 times how many sacks do you think we can get against Chad Henne?

In my opinion this teams defense is aat least as good as 2003. If we have Gholston or a freshmen start tearing it up on the end we could be as good or better than 2002.

I was impressed with our run defense against Texas. VY and co. had 2 good drives and then we shut the running game down. The secondary is what I was disappointed in. They missed so may tackles. They seemed a step slow all night. I don't think we will face another QB even close to VY calibre.

Notice I didn't say the defense wouldn't be as good as the '02 version (although I suspect it won't). I said they D-line isn't and won't be as good. About that, I have little doubt. The linebackers this year are clearly better. The secondary is close, but not quite as good, in my view. Getting to your point on the unit as a whole (line, backers, and DB's), if one can be dominant, and the others solid, I'll take a dominant line. I agree that this defense has the potential to be very good. But routine and absolute domination of the line of scrimmage is a luxury that they won't have.

our defense could be as good as the '02 defense by the end of the year. i think our d-line played great against texas, considering they had the top o-line in the nation.

we will have a great pass rush in the coming years, if not this year. we have tons of young potential at the defensive spot. someone will step up and be a great player.

We may not face a better runner than VY, (that would call for a Vick to face us) I think though we shall face at least one better passer -- he plays for that State Universiity up North. Hopefully by then the secondary will be hitting on all cylinders.

Both of the Drew's could give our defense fits if they are healthy and play well. They are both better passers than Young, but they both have had injury problems. Drew Tate ran and passed better than Young in the game last year, but it looks like Iowa's O-line is much weaker than it was last year so we hopefully can get to him easier. If Iowa State can knock him out we can too. Michigan took care of Stanton so we didn't have to last year.

I think people need to realize just how incredible Will Smith was. To put it in perspective, we will expect a dropoff at WR (maybe not overall, but few will expect another superstar like that right away).

I like Pitcock, but I don't know that he compares to our 02 tackles. We had a truly special line in 02. We should expect excellence, but should not expect one of if not the greatest DEs to play at OSU.

I think Kudla is in for a big year, tho.
