Buckeye Defensive Line - 2005 (official thread)

We had 24 sacks last season. We have 8 in two games this year, with three against what may be the best OL in the country. They may come from blitzes and LBs, but they don't happen if the DL isn't occupying the OL.

That said, the Wil Smith type has yet to emerge. I am still putting my money on Patterson to be that person. Kudla, for all his measurables, is a solid DE but not an AA candidate.

I think the biggest thing our DL is doing right now is freeing up the LBs to make the plays they need to make. The role of DL is primary, then secondary-
Primarily, DL need to occupy. Occupy their gap and occupy as many OL as they can without giving up ground.
Secondarily, get off the block and make the tackle or pressure the QB. This is what makes a difference in a great DL and a good DL.
Good DL always have their primary role in check, great DL always make the plays (if possible) on top of the primary roles.
IMHO, our DL is good with some potential to be great. They are performing their primary roles (which is a very hard thing to do), and taking on the secondary role in some circumstances.

I believe Jay Rich had applyed some decent pressure to YOung. We didnt see the pressure against Texas b/c they have a great O-line and we needed to stay in our lanes. I think we will see the pressure this weekend.

Hopefully we can get Gholston back. I thought he was suppossed to play against Texas, but never seen him.

Good point.
Definitely props to the Texas OL, they would certainly neutralize a whole lot of DLs across the country.

Hey LJB I am not trying to pick on you, but I think you are being too hard on the d-line. I don't think the coaches are telling them to let lose and go attack. I think they are being told to stay in their lanes and occupy a man. Using the gap defense scheme. Also I think the ends are getting some pressure.
