Buckeye coaching question

A humble question for Buckeye fans far more knowledgeable than I am..

Under Tressel, we have the following former Ohio State players now as coaches in college:

  • Anthony Schlegel (Assistant Strength & Conditioning at OSU)
  • Marcus Freeman (LB coach at Kent State)
  • Richard McNutt (CB coach at Northern Illinois)
So my question is this - does Ohio State usually produce coaches this often? Are 3 OSU grads as coaches normal over a 10 year span? It would seem like (to me), that is a pretty good number, given how many Buckeyes are in the pros and may go on to coaching at a later time.

Thanks for your input!

Coach Tressel is first and foremost a teacher. Second, he is fiercely loyal to his former players and will do all he can to see them succeed. See Maurice Clarrett.

You'll want to add Luke Fickel to your list as well.

Fickell didn't actually play for Tressel, which is what I think the OP was referring to.

It really makes sense though, when you love the game enough to train like you need to to play for Ohio State it's not that big of a stretch that you'd get a lot of guys taking the next step into coaching. Plus they've had a chance to see how one of the best coaches in the entire country runs things.

The connection to Ohio State opens many doors. Prospective coaches from OSU come from a quality program and thus this is a great reference. Coach Tressel helps those who are in his program and rightfully so. Over the years, OSU has produced a good number of coaches and a good number of players who succeed in all avenues.

The most important factor in this is the quality of the individual. As Woody said, "You Win With People." This is something that holds true year after year. The connection you make with great people makes you better in every way.

Yup. I was only asking about OSU grads that are now coaching under Tressel. Fickell played under Cooper, and Pelinni played under Bruce.
