Buckeye Autograph Sessions (all merged)

Funny story: I went to the Columbus Auto show a couple of days ago for the Coach Tressel autograph session.

I was one of the first few guys in line and one dude in front of me was trying to figure out what color sharpie would show up best on his mini helmut. I told him that I've seen red, black and blue...and that red (though the color would be appropriate) just doesn't seem to "jump" out at you very well, blue really pops out good (if you can stand to put that color on your OSU memorabilia), so I usually just stick with black.

When the promotor (a lady working with the Buckeye Boosters) came around with photos and sharpies the guy asks if she had a blue one, which she quickly made the same comment I did, something like "are you serious? Why would you want that color of Coach T's signature on your stuff?", but she did have one and left it on the table.

Coach showed up 10 minutes later and as soon as he sat down the first thing he did was see the blue sharpie, picked it up and said, "Now you know we won't be using that one." The guy who wanted his helmut signed in blue got up to Coach and asked again, but Coach T responded in a polite / joking, but serious manner, "No, I can't bring myself to sign anything in that color."

Woody would be proud...:osu:

Great event...Thanks Buckeye Boosters...Thanks Coach Tress.

OSU stars come out for Centerville fundraiser

ESPN's Herbstreit joined by Mangold, Hawk, famed fiancee

By Chick Ludwig
Dayton Daily News
DAYTON | As North Carolina coach Roy Williams hunkered down for his NCAA news conference at University of Dayton Arena on Thursday, the doors of the Dayton Convention Center opened for the Sonny Unger Foundation Banquet moderated by ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit.
<!--endtext-->
<!-- tn -->
<!-- inset --> <!--begintext--> Suddenly, a group of NFL-bound Ohio State football players burst into the VIP room.
There was center Nick Mangold; linebackers A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Schlegel; and the 2005 college football season's most famous fan ... Hawk's fiancee, Laura Quinn, the sister of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn.
Wearing a dazzling diamond on her left ring finger, Quinn revealed she and Hawk became engaged last week and are planning a 2007 St. Patrick's Day wedding.
"He did a great job," said Quinn, showing off her rock. "Wonderful. He did it all by himself."
How many carats?
"I don't know," shrugged Hawk. "It's pretty big."
Hawk sacked Brady Quinn twice in Ohio State's Fiesta Bowl victory as Laura watched from the stands at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., garnering as much face time in her half-OSU, half-ND jersey from ABC cameras as a movie star walking the red carpet at the Academy Awards.
"Who's the bigger celebrity, you or your date?" Hawk was asked.
"Probably my date," he said. "People love her and they seem to know her everywhere we go."
With his signature long hair, Hawk is easily recognizable, too. Football fans will see him on Sundays this fall after he gets selected in the first round of the NFL draft on April 29.
The 6-foot-1, 248-pounder solidified his status as a top-10 pick after his 4.38 clocking in the 40-yard dash at Ohio State's Pro Day.
"Right now I'm waiting to see what's going to happen to us," Hawk said. "I had a great four years. It was a lot of fun and I got to play with a lot of great guys.
"It is exciting. It is a different stage in your life. It still hasn't really sunk in that I'm done at Ohio State. Once I get drafted, I know it's going to be a busy year after that. So I'm just trying to enjoy it now by doing stuff like this, coming out and supporting Centerville."
The Sonny Unger event is named after the former Centerville High School football player and decorated solider who died in the Vietnam War. Profits from the banquet — attendance was estimated at 1,000 — help fund scholarships for Centerville athletes. This year's recipients are linemen Simon Abboud and Chase Collins.
The evening was a chance for Hawk to exhale. He endured two sociology exams on Thursday and will graduate with a bachelor's degree in criminology in June. Then it's off to the NFL and marital bliss.
But first things first: The Buckeyes face Davidson in a first-round NCAA Tournament game today. The linebackers won't attend, but will be here in spirit.
"I love watching college basketball," Carpenter said. "March Madness is one of the unique things in sports where good teams that nobody's heard of — Cinderella stories — come out of nowhere to win a few games. It's something the nation really embraces."
"If they can get hot on the 3," added Schlegel, blowing into an Elk horn he wore around his neck, "I think they can go to the Final Four if not all the way.
"Go Bucks!"

Buckeye fans pack the mall
By BOB PUTMAN
The Marion Star

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"> <tbody><tr><td valign="top"> <!-- ARTICLE BODYTEXT --> <!--ARTICLE TEXT--> MARION - A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Schlegel played side by side during the 2005 college football season, leading the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 9-2 regular season record and a victory in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl.
The linebacking trio was together again Saturday at Southland Mall, only this time they did not have to worry about a big offensive lineman or a shifty running back.
The Buckeye players greeted and signed autographs for hundreds of Ohio State fans at the mall's center court. Fans began lining up at 6:30 a.m., before the doors to the mall were opened, and by the time the players arrived the line extended to the far north side of the mall.
"It was awesome just shaking their hands and seeing them," 10-year-old Eric Bell of Marion said. "I am the biggest Ohio State fan in my class at Liberty Elementary.""It was something special," Brad Bell, Eric's dad, said. "I took Eric to his first Ohio State game last year against San Diego State. It was neat to see them up close after seeing them on the field."
Bill Fegley of Marion is an avid collector of sports memorabilia and autographs and does not miss a chance to add to his collection, especially when it comes to Ohio State football.
"I have Hall of Famers that are special but Buckeye football is my favorite," Fegley said. "I cherish the memories of seeing some of the greatest players."
While Fegley thinks there may have been better individual linebackers at Ohio State, he would be hard pressed to pick another better group.
"They are the greatest three linebackers for the total package," he said.
"It was an awesome experience being together," Schlegel said. "We knew what each other was doing and we were able to feed off each other."
Hawk is expected to be one of the top picks in next month's National Football League draft and recently took part with other Ohio State players in workouts for the NFL scouts.
"There was a lot of pressure on everybody, but really no extra pressure," Hawk said. "We just needed to relax and do what our coaches have taught us."
Carpenter is a little more familiar with the rigors of the NFL.
He is the son of Rob Carpenter, who played 10 seasons from 1979-86 as a NFL running back, mostly with the Houston Oilers and New York Giants. He rushed for 4,363 yards and scored 29 touchdowns.
"We talked a little bit about the NFL," Bobby Carpenter said. "There is a definite change in the difficulty in the NFL. But he told me from high school to college was a bigger jump from a situation of playing against better players."
Carpenter suffered a broken leg in OSU's regular-season finale against Michigan and did not play in the Fiesta Bowl.
"I'm feeling pretty good about my leg," Carpenter said.
Hawk is ready to step up to the next level.
"It's been my dream to play in the NFL," he said. "I know it will be tougher but I'm looking forward to it."
