Bryce "L" Underwood (QB2 for ttun, for now)

The more I think about it, the weirder I think it is that he went to California for the bye week.
1. He's in school. Are all of his classes online, or doesn't he need to go to class? Do they even play school, anymore? Are coaches cool with him skipping classes?
2. Doesn't the team still practice in a bye week? The coaches were cool with him skipping practices? Who runs the offense in practice when he's out?
He got $12MM. What is school?

Underwood was not sulking or doing anything that would label him as a bad teammate. If anything, he was the loudest and most enthusiastic person on the sideline celebrating the guy who had just taken his job. And judging by how Carr spoke in the postgame press conference, he seemed quite appreciative of that.

Just sayin': It will be interesting to see how this plays out especially if Carr is deemed to be at least halfway successful and it looks like Carr will likely be the QB1 in 2027. Underwood has a NIL contract for $12M, which I ass/u/me is $3M a year over 4 years.

1) If Underwood transfers he'll probably forfeit the remaining $6M and there is no way any other team is going to offer him anything more than "chump change" to transfer to their school. This option really sucks as it will save scUM $6M of NIL money.

2) If Underwood decides to stay he should still get the remaining $6M; however, he'll kill his hopes for an NFL career (which he doesn't have anyway) and (barring an injury to Carr) he will be sitting on the bench watching Carr play for 2 years.

Just sayin': I don't think anybody has ever accused Underwood of being smart; however, a smart young man in Underwood's position out of high school really should consider:

a. Hey, I'm the #1 recruit, I'm a QB, and I actually believe that I'll have a glorious NFL carrier after college. However, I know that lot's of other athletes that were in my position didn't, blew all the money, didn't graduate, and ended up with a "nothing job" the rest of their life.

b. If I can't make the NFL after 3 or 4 years at scUM, I probably can't do any better elsewhere. After 3 years if it looks like I'll go high in the NFL draft I'll go. First round draft pick get millions in guaranteed money. If I'm not projected as a first round pick I'll stay a 4th year at scUM, graduate, and then take my chances in the NFL draft.

c. To hedge my bet and/or secure my future; every year I'll invest my $3M in Michigan tax free municipal bonds; i.e. at a 5% rate that's $150,000 a year.

Individual bond yields vary based on the issuer's credit rating, structure, and maturity timeline tracked via Michigan Municipal Bonds:
  • Long-Term (2040–2055 maturities): ~4.6% to 5.9% (depending on general obligation vs. revenue/hospital bonds like Henry Ford Health or Great Lakes Water Authority)
Any freshman getting a full athletic scholarship should have no problem surviving on $150,000. Likewise, any sophomore getting a full athletic scholarship should have no problem surviving on $300,000. After 4 years he (basically) would have a tax free income of $600,000 per year for life plus a college degree. For his "life after football" he could work where ever he wanted in a job that he actually liked and be "set for life" with the additional $600K. In addition, he still has the $12M in bonds that he could sell off if needed.

If he has halfway decent advisors, he stays and banks the 6M. Zero chance that he's a high pick with guaranteed money that would offset the 6m.
