Amidst illness/eligibility issues, USC to shelve five-star 2019 WR Bru McCoy for rest of season

Bru McCoy‘s true freshman season at USC will end the same way it began — on the sidelines.

Due to one part unspecified illness and another part eligibility issues, the highly-touted and much-discussed 2019 signee had yet to see the field for the Trojans’ first eight games of the 2019 season. Wednesday, Clay Helton acknowledged that McCoy will not play at all the remainder of the season.

McCoy will take a redshirt for this season, leaving him with four years of eligibility.

“Right now, Bru is not going to play this year,” said the head coach. “He’s doing a great job academically, doing a great job in strength and conditioning. He’ll be ready for spring.”

The illness/eligibility issues continued what was a roller coaster last year or so for McCoy.

McCoy, a five-star 2019 recruit who signed with USC in December, was reportedly mulling a transfer to Texas a month later… which was followed not long after by USC granting a release to McCoy from his National Letter of Intent so he would be free to move about the country… which was followed by McCoy signing with Texas in late January… which was followed by reports that surfaced Memorial Day that McCoy had told Helton he had decided to leave Texas and return to USC.

The last Tuesday of May, it was reported that a “severe case of homesickness” had led to the California native’s uncertainty. That same day, another report surfaced that a UT contingent, headed by head coach Tom Herman, made the trek to the Golden State in an attempt to convince McCoy to stick to his commitment to the Longhorns. That move didn’t bear fruit as McCoy confirmed on the last day of May that he would be returning to the Trojans.

USC wide receiver Bru McCoy suspended from team activities following July arrest

Redshirt sophomore Bru McCoy was arrested on suspicion of a felony more than a week ago, USCFootball.com has learned. The wide receiver was charged with intimate partner violence with injury, according to an LAPD spokesperson. McCoy, 21, was released on $50,000 bail on July 24th, the same day of his arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 24.

"USC does not condone violence of any kind," the athletic department said when contacted for a statement. "We are aware of the situation, and USC’s Office for Equity, Equal Opportunity, and Title IX is reviewing it. Because of federal student privacy laws, we are unable to share additional information at this time.

“The student-athlete has been temporarily removed from team activities.”

Sources familiar with police operations explained that in the case of a domestic violence call, officers are more likely to make an arrest and defer criminal charges to a district attorney. McCoy’s criminal charges are still pending, according to McCoy’s arrest filing. However, sources with knowledge of McCoy’s situation have suggested it is unlikely McCoy will see the field in 2021 due to the serious nature of the allegations.

Easily one of the strangest football careers I can ever remember(and that's saying a lot)
Per wiki:
A five star recruit out of high school, 247Sports.com ranked him the ninth-best recruit in the class of 2019.[4] McCoy committed to the University of Southern California (USC) to play for the USC Trojans.[9] He graduated early from Mater Dei and enrolled at USC in January 2019. After 17 days, he opted to transfer to the University of Texas at Austin, as he felt betrayed by Kliff Kingsbury, the Trojans' offensive coordinator, leaving USC to be the head coach for the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League.[4][10][11] He participated in spring practice with the Texas Longhorns, before he decided to leave Texas.[12] He transferred back to USC in June.[13] He missed several months of the 2019 season due to symptoms that were never diagnosed, and took a redshirt for the season.[14][15] McCoy made his college football debut for the Trojans in the 2020 season.[16] He caught 21 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns.[17] After a July 2021 arrest for alleged domestic violence, McCoy was suspended indefinitely from the football team. Citing privacy regulations, former USC coach Clay Helton was not forthcoming with more information with the media.[18] Despite all charges being dropped for a lack of evidence, USC did not reinstate McCoy.[19]
Oh, and then he transfers to Tennessee, where he finished his CFB career
