All I was saying if they think Rodgers or Smith is the real deal, I say they take them. Crennel doesn't have to win now... and I agree that they could use a LOT of help... but... you also can't turn down a franchise QB. (I'm not saying that those guys are great or not great or whatever... but in their situation , I think you have to take the best Player available... especially if its at a need position, which, QB is.)
There is no gaurantee for a "win now" pick... look what happened with KWII... they overpaid, and he broke his leg...

Yes Alan, if they don't use the #3, I would love to see them shop it around for maybe a couple of late #1's and a #2....something of the sort. They need so much help, they don't need the #1 pick to get it, they need quantity unfortunately.

But... BMW is looking in great shape, so that helps... and the 2 QB's and a few other guys might get thrown up top... so... the value might be there.

I wish D'Brickshaw Ferguson would have come out this year. He was an Offensive Lineman worthy of a number 3 pick. The best lineman in this years draft is Alex Barron and he is probably no better than a 10-15. We need to trade down. Follow Pittsburgh's model for drafting a QB, don't do it until you have peices around him or he'll get killed and get his confidence smashed (Couch).

hopefully the combines will elevate a handful of players to the top of the draft boards and give cleveland some sort of bargaining power for a trade down.
i said jokingly a while back that I would be satisfied if cleveland drafted 7 guys that lined up in a 3-point stance every play.
as of now, cleveland is in need of guards on the OL over tackles.

I'm still sticking with wanting a QB at the #3 pick with either Rodgers or Smith. I really like Smith..I think Rodgers is gone by the Browns' pick.
Barron was brought up. I have him going as high as Tennessee at the #6 pick. Maybe the Browns could move down a few spots but I don't think Barron lasts past the #12 pick with San Diego or #14 at Carolina.
There are a couple of OL's that could be there in the second round. It may be better to wait till then.
If the Browns don't take a QB with the #3 pick, I think the only guys worth consideration at this point is Derrick Johnson, Antrell Rolle, and Pac-Man Jones. This is definetely not a year for top 5 defensive talent.
The only chance I see Cleveland trading down is with Arizona to get an RB. Arizona is in a peculiar spot since Miami, Tampa, and Oakland need RB's with Cadillac, Ronnie Brown, and Benson to choose from, thus, putting Zona in a spot to trade up to get one of them. There is a chance that Alex Smith could still slip to #8 as well as Barron.
Overall, I still think Smith is the choice and then hope that either Adam Terry or David Baas will slip down to their choice in round 2.
and remember this...Walter Jones of Seattle is an FA along with Hasslebeck and Alexander. The chances they would franchise Jones over those 2 is very remote. That would be my biggest FA guy right there.

The Browns are going to be running the 3-4, which I think means no Derrick Johnson. He doesn't have the weight and isn't strong enough at the point of attack to play there. 20 pounds is a lot to ask someone to put on after they graduate from college, and still keep their speed. My draft choice I really want is Shawne Merriman from Maryland. He's not rated as high on some boards because he's a bit small to play DE, but perfect for OLB in the 3-4. Athletic demon and he's really rising. If the Browns could trade down to like 8 and pick up another second, wow.

Give me Joe Andruzzi, Shawne Merriman, Brandon Browner (a corner, in the second), Ryan Moats (a running back, in the third), and take someone for the future like Jason Campbell with the second, and I think you've got a vastly improved team. Have Courtney Brown drop some weight and line up as an OLB.. I see Jamir Miller 2 in my head.

If they decide to not take a qb in the first round, then they almost have to trade down for multiple picks. In my opinion, believe it or not, Cleveland is only a few draft picks away from being competitive. They need to start on the offensive line, regardless of the other areas. They have a average qb and some decent backs, plus some speedy receivers. They need to make some solid draft picks.

Wouldn't Johnson be an ideal ILB in a 3-4 scheme? Most ILB's are the fast 230-240 pound types in the 3-4.
I like Merriman but he's not worth a 3 or an 8 and you know he'll be gone by the second round. Browner's chances of being there in the second is about 5% in my opinion but I like the thought of a DB in the second round or at least the third. If you look at the Pats LB's, only McGinest was a high pick and I believe he was picked up before they even went to the 3-4...3-4 OLB's are easier to come by later on since only a handful of NFL teams even use that style of defense.
Personally, I think Brown is done for.
As far as non-first round QB's...shit, if Charlie Frye is there in the second and they don't go for a QB in the first, that's my pick. I'm not a fan of Campbell though. I'd rather have Andrew Walter or Derek Anderson.

I don't know, Goof. I respect the hell out of you but I don't think you're right in the DJ case, bro. :) I just don't think he fits in a 3-4. He would have been great with Davis and Chaun Thompson in the 4-3 they ran last year, but I don't like him as an OLB in the 3-4. The LBs that play inside (Bruschi and Roman Phifer) are both about 250 and hold up well at the point of attack. Really, the speed is nice as an ILB in the 3-4 but they need to be able to tackle well. I like DJ as a blitzer and a playmaker but he's just much more an ideal 4-3 OLB. Plus, to take him at 3 and hope he can put on 20 pounds and still play is risky, you know? He's maybe 230 now, so it might be tough...

I can't see them going corner in round 1 (considering Rome's D won the SB with Randall Gay, Troy Brown and Hank Poteat), and there aren't any 3-4 DE's or DT's worth taking top 10. So if it's D, it's got to be a LB and Merriman is the best fit. I don't think they will get him, I just love him.

they have said repeatedly that htey are going to follow the model that baltimore and NE used (building a team foundation and finding a qb to fit that team later). I dont think alex smith is that good to begin with, and he certainly isnt a cant miss prospect to prompt savage and crennel to take him.
sorry goofy, the browns arent going to be taking a qb at #3 unless alex smith blows everyone away at the combine.

Does Alex Smith even have that strong of an arm? I watched a few Utes games and was not impressed with his strength, but instead his route reads and touch.
I'm glad the Browns don't plan on getting a QB with the #3. I'd still trade it, unless they have some specific expectations from one particular top flight kid. I think in the first 2 rounds (if they can trade and get 3 picks between the 2 rounds), they need an OL, a DB and a LB. OR...with the recent success of rookie OL, I'd be bold enough to spend two of the first 3 on the line. Rome will work his magic with the D. The consistent downfall of the Browns over the last few seasons has been there horrific oline play.
