Let me start this rant by saying two things: First, I expected the Browns to lose this game, and I didn't really expect it to be close. Second, if anybody told me at the beginning of the year that the Browns would start off 2-3, I would've laughed at them.
It may sound ridiculous to say that this is the game the Browns should measure themselves by, but I think it's the truth. New England is the standard-bearer in the NFL for everything except ethics and professional dress, and given that this franchise has significant ties in terms of philosophy and personnel to NE, this is a chance to see just how far the Browns have to go.
Let's start with a few good things: Josh Cribbs is a plus - best in the NFL at what he does. He's the only aspect of this team you can say that about.
I like our linebackers and I like our top two CBs. They're young, but they're improving.
The Browns have good players at some skill positions on offense. Not spectacular, and certainly limited in some regards - but good enough to give the team a fighting chance most weeks.
I also like Rob Chudzinski (sp?) at offensive coordinator. It seems like he's the first coordinator the Browns have had since their returnt to the NFL on either side of the ball that makes the most of the personnel he has available to him. I think he's a keeper, even after Crennel is gone.
...Which brings me to the bad stuff. Even if the Browns somehow finish the year around 7-9, Crennel and Grantham need to go. The Browns at least showed flashes of mediocrity on defense under the previous regime, and the switch to the 3-4 has been their baby and it has been nothing short of a disaster.
The defensive line stinks. It is seemingly in a constant state of backwards motion, and can't keep the LBs freed up to make plays. The defense generates zero pressure on opposing QBs, and as a result the secondary can't hold up.
Defense is supposed to be these guys' forte, and under their watch it has not just failed to improve, it has regressed.
I wouldn't be up in arms if Savage were gone after this season, but I don't think the biggest problems with this team lie at his feet.
