Former Packer Chmura rips Favre, calls him 'selfish'

Former Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl tight end Mark Chmura ripped Brett Favre - his former friend and teammate - during his Sunday morning radio show.

Commenting on Favre's inability to make a decision on whether to retire or return for one more season, Chmura said: "People who don't think that it's all about him are fooling themselves. With a quote like 'What are they gonna do, cut me?' It's all about him."

On Thursday, Favre dismissed the idea that the Packers had set an April 1 deadline for a decision on his future. Favre told the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald: "If I don't tell them by Saturday, what will they do, cut me?"

Saturday had been the due date for a $3 million roster bonus for Favre. But Packers general manager Ted Thompson said Friday that the team again decided to push back the bonus date. It is the third time this offseason that the date for the roster bonus has been changed.

Chmura made his comments during the Miller Lite Football Show, which airs Sunday mornings from 8 to 10 a.m. on Milwaukee's ESPN Radio, WAUK-AM/1510.

Chmura continued: "Where it's hypocritical is, (Favre is) very critical of Javon Walker and, 'He's not a team player, you know (Walker) doesn't care about the team.'

"Well, what's (Favre) doing now? I mean, does he think this is the best thing possible for the team? I mean, they have one quarterback on the roster who they like ... they have to know."

Chmura added: "These quotes are, 'I am bigger than the team, I will make my decision when I want, and (Packers general manager) Ted Thompson and (coach) Mike McCarthy aren't gonna tell me what to do."

Chmura added that he isn't sure why Favre would want to return in 2006.

"Then (Favre) had the other quote in the newspaper saying if he comes back this is 'definitely his last year.' Well, the Packers aren't going to the Super Bowl. They aren't close to going to the Super Bowl. I think if they keep going in the direction they are they can go 8-8, 9-7. Why come back? Why, if it's not the money?"

Chmura last played for the Packers on Sept.19, 1999, when he sustained a career-threatening neck injury against Detroit. He missed the rest of the 1999 season, and in May 2000 was charged with rape after a 17-year-old girl told police he sexually assaulted her at a high school post-prom party.

The Packers released Chmura less than a month after he was charged. After a trial that drew national attention, Chmura was found not guilty in February 2001. He considered an NFL comeback but decided against it.

His comments Sunday make it appear as though Chmura still is bitter about the lack of support he got from Favre during his legal troubles.

"He's a selfish guy," Chmura said of Favre. "He's a very selfish guy. And what people don't know, I'm not going to say this to throw the guy under the bus, but this is a guy from my arrest to my acquittal never called me one time.

"It was disappointing, but you know you find out what people are made of, what they are all about. And I'll tell you what, the friends I have now, I wouldn't trade them for anything.

"You know I got more calls and letters from the old timers. Fuzzy Thurston. Jerry Kramer. Ron Kramer."

Favre is washed up. He's sucked and choked in the postseason the last two times he was there and did nothing at all last year.
It will be great day when we can stop talking about all his stupid personal shit.

OK, so lets say that assessment is spot on.

What does it say about the Packer organization that they then do not simply cut those ties, say ciao to Favre and move on?

I think LokyBuckeye had it right earlier - Packerland is a strange place.
If Favre is over-rating his value to the organization he surely isn't alone in that room of mirrors.

Chmura has been bitter ever since his trial.... I think he was expecting more support than he got from the Packers.... what kind of freak goes to a high school prom party anyway?

sour grapes.

fans outside of Green Bay don't agree with it or understand it but Favre does get special treatment by the organization... and the majority of Packer fans are OK with it and they will wait for an answer until the sun burns out if they have to.

LoKy is right, Chmura has been an ass since his trial, bad mouthing the Packers and the players at every opportunity. I really don't give a damn what he says and I don't think anyone in Green Bay does either. If Green Bay had developed a serviceable replacement you might have seen Bret retire before now, they haven't and he's their only shot, save for a trade, of having an NFL caliber QB playing this fall.

Tibs you won't draw me in with that one!!!

It's not

Big News!!

Brett Favre had a press conference this morning, which ESPN broke to live during SportsCenter, to announce that:

He hasn't yet made a decision about the upcoming season.

Seriously.

Gimme a break. What a drama queen.

I believe he said that he had told them ahead of time there would be no decision today. He said he didn't know why they all came down for the presser. To sum it up, he said he'll decide when he decides and the rest of us should follow baseball!

maybe us fans from out of state can do that but the poor schmucks in Wisconsin have to follow the Brewers... no much to follow there. :)
