Bret Bielema (HC Illinois)

"Frozen wasteland"

Frozen it may be, but wasteland it certainly is not. Have you ever been to Madison?

Glad to jump in on this: Take a fall afternoon, stroll in to the Rathskeller and ask the barman to pour you a Linenkugel, go sit on the enormous patio and look out at American Lake. Few colleges can match the venue. Walk down the main drag at night, great places to eat and drink, a very sophisticated small town thanks to the school and the state government.

Finally pull up any rankings of colleges and look at the standings, undergrad, grad, revenue raised from research - now compare with ANY school in the SEC. Wisconsin has much to offer and a great deal to be proud of.

You don't seem to realize the circumstances. While Alvarez's winning percentage at Winsconsin was .616 compared to Bi-Enema's .759, when Alvarez took over in 1990 that program was absolute [Mark May], coming off a four year run of 9-36. It took him three years, but he eventually built the program up from the ground. He went to three Rose Bowl and won all three. When he left and Bi-Enema took over, Wisconsin was coming of 9-3 and 10-3 records, and with a loaded roster thanks to Alvarez even The Douche was able to coach them to a 12-1 record his first year. He then dropped to 9-4 and 7-6 seasons. He went to the Rose Bowl twice and lost both. The Douche may have as many B1G titles as did Alvarez (three each), but this year's "title" comes with an asterisk the size of a blackhole.

Don't be fooled by what The Douche was able to pull up in Madison...
Even so, Barry's teams started to drop off towards the end of his tenure. In his last 5 years he had a 20-20 conference record.

Oddly enough, many complaints about Barry stemmed from his clock management. No joke. But they were much different than complaints about Bret.

Barry's errors were passive. He'd let the clock run out in the 1st half when there was a decent chance Wisconsin could get at least a FG chance if they kept attacking. Fans are annoyed by those, but let them go.

Bret's errors were active. He probably cost Wisconsin 2 games in East Lansing alone by using timeouts on defense when he shouldn't have.

Other things: too conservative of playcalling, not enough blitzing or press coverage, didn't recruit very well.

10-18 (and that's with Dickrod's scUM factored in).

Geez, I didn't know it was that bad. Somebody (Fiutak? Mandel?) wrote an article earlier this week saying that Biff inflated his record beating up on the sisters of the poor, along with the advantage of a down cycle in the B1G. Those numbers right up there pretty much bare that out. Good luck in the SEC West, Moobs.

Exactly. He nuked any bridges that he possibly had to return as any type of coach at either his alma mater or Wisconsin.

He's basically going to garner a mercenary tag after this move, but only the coaches that win consistently can have that title and still be employed (Saban is the prime example of this - so is, to a certain extent, Calipari). FatBoy isn't on the same planet as those two in terms of recruiting, success or any other factor you wish to put in there.

He was going to be dominated in upcoming years in the Big Ten by at least 3 of the 4 kings of the conference, it's pretty clear he had no plan going forward for the QB position and his recruiting was down across the board. This guy was planning this the entire time. He deserves what he gets.

You're failing to recognize one crucial variable. Strength of Schedule. The B1G was far tougher sledding in Barry's day than in Biff's.

What really tickles my funny bone is Smoov being so accepting of a coach based on his record against the B1G teams. I thought the SEC company line was how shitty the B1G is and how awezome the SEC is. I mean...I thought beating NW & Indiana didn't count. Guess it only counts if it helps you justify this hire.

The facilities argument is ironic, because Bielema left Wisconsin in the midst of $86 million in renovations to the football facilities.

Yes, but how many different pools? Anyone can have five pools. Only Arkansas is capable of having five DIFFERENT pools though. I fear this is one area the B1G just can't compete.

Ahh damnit. I didn't think of that. Wisconsin only has one pool I think? Very embarrassing.

Bart Beelzebub is now in the S-E-C Conference. Ergo I do not care what sort of things he might do from here on out.
