Michigan hires Brady Hoke: Former Wolverine and Cleveland Browns tight end Aaron Shea loves his school's new coach
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Brady Hoke pounded his finger on the podium while saying that the Ohio State-Michigan game was the most important game on the schedule and called the rivalry "personal."
The new Michigan coach, who spent his childhood in the Dayton area, said he respected Woody Hayes as a kid, but he grew up as a Michigan fan because all his friends liked Ohio State.
At his introductory news conference today, Hoke said he would have walked to Michigan from San Diego to accept the job, and athletic director David Brandon said Hoke took the job without money ever being discussed.
In a room filled with former Michigan players, Hoke won the day with talk of tradition that was just what a lot of Wolverines needed to hear.
Among them were former Michigan and Browns tight end Aaron Shea, who played at Michigan during the eight-year era in which Hoke was serving as the Wolverines' defensive line coach. Shea lives in Westlake and works for the Browns, and the last few years haven't been easy for Michigan fans in Ohio.
"Living in Cleveland, I've had it," Shea said. "I told my wife, we have to get (the coaching hire) right this time, or we're going somewhere else."
Shea said his children don't want to wear Michigan clothes to school because they're teased by older kids. He said he hadn't been wearing his Michigan national championship ring lately, but he decided to bring it out this year.
Now, with the hiring of the candidate he backed all along, "I'm keeping it out for a while, just to remind them. Coach Hoke is going to bring us back to this level," Shea said.
"I always wear Michigan stuff with pride," Shea said, "but when I was first drafted in Cleveland in 2000, I'd walk by a person and their head would go down, and that meant they went to Ohio State.
"There are more Michigan people in Cleveland than I thought when I went there, but I don't know where they've been. They're hibernating right now. ... The pride never went anywhere, but I think some people may have forgot about it. But Michigan football will be back. I'm just looking forward to getting back to Michigan football."
Shea said he heard the same thing from a friend last week, when he talked with a former teammate - New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
"I know how much Tom Brady loves Brady Hoke, and when I talked to him last week, he said we need to get this guy," said Shea, who said Brady then asked for the cell phone number of Brandon.
"So people sometimes say, 'We don't see Tommy around.' Let me tell you, make no mistake, Tom Brady loves Michigan. And you'll be hearing Tommy talk Michigan a lot more."
