Brady "XLLL" Hoke (Head Coach San Diego State)

It is a sad state of affairs when they don't even have a September Heisman trophy.

Check this out....

Did you guys see this one?
Fatty is worried about his D-coordinator (the same D that only gave up one TD) being on the field?
Maybe if your big arse was on the field, your offense would play as well as your defense would have.

Plus - telling a guy who left an NFL job with the Ravens (former D coordinator), who has a national championship ring from an SEC School (Florida) with ties to your rival's head coach (Urbs) doesn't make good sense. The guy has better coaching credentials than you do, Fatty - he might be the one to replace you.

A throwback from the usually prescient mgoblog the day after Hoke's hiring.

They pretty much nailed it.

My favorite line from that:

  • Who is Gus Malzahn? Texas just blew their coaching staff up and hired Manny Diaz and the Boise State OC, so they're off the table. It is January 11th. Next up is… I have no idea. Honestly, if you were going to poach an up-and-coming coordinator your best option on defense is none other than Scott Shafer, and on offense there isn't anyone, really. I'll believe Michigan has hired Randy Shannon as a DC six months after it's announced, but that's what this plan requires: hiring Randy goddamn Shannon as DC at a million a year.

Mattison is the only good thing Michigan has going for it right now and the only competent move Hoke has made as a head coach. If that relationship falls apart it is a clear sign that the end is near for Hoke.

Worst of all (for Hoke, it's fun on the outside looking in) it sounds like Mattison is the one who instigated the exchange. Perhaps he's a little disappointed in the zero touchdowns his counterparts have been able to muster on offense in their two losses?

Hiring even Utah's Kyle Whittingham would be a nice upgrade for them and not cost too much!
I've now come over to the thinking that we really don't need them great again as long as MSU is winning 10-11 games a year. And it won't be long before Ped State is winning a lot of games also.

Despite Coop's issues, and there were many, he did not destroy the program, like Callahan did at Nebraska and the combo of Hoke and Dickrod did at Michigan.
Coop did a lot more than just not destroy the program. I think that Earle was a great coach. But, what he was not the best at, in my opinion anyway, was recruiting. That's not to say he didn't get his share of studs, and the recruiting game was certainly different then, but... Earle could turn a 2 star kid into a 5 star stud much more consistently than Coop (which is to say, ever).

Coop, and again - his other failing aside - was able to change Ohio State's recruiting and get more talent into Ohio State than his predecessor. Coop had some really good teams in 93, 95, 96 and 98 in particular. Earle probably would have done better on the field with those players, but it was Coop who was able to get them here in the first place. I don't think David Boston comes to Ohio State under Earle, I guess is what I'm trying to say.

I don't know...

Cooper couldn't beat Michigan and he did need to go, but he sometimes gets a worse rap than I think he deserves.
