The poll results are now in.

Lots of disagreement amongst the pollsters.

Thirteen teams received at least one top-5 vote.

Each of the 32 ballots contained at least one team that did not make the top 25.

Aside from Alabama and Ohio State, who essentially split the #1 and #2 votes (except for the #1 vote for JMU), Wisconsin was the most consistent entry, with 23 of its 32 votes being either #9, #10, or #11.

Air Force was on 13 ballots but received just 28 total points. On the other hand, Southern Cal was on just 8 ballots but received 56 total points.

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Iowa
  4. Oregon - I didn?t think they?d win, coming east to play Tennessee. They clearly struggled to find their bearings in the first half, but turned it on like a top team should in the second half. Color me impressed.
  5. Oklahoma - Last week I had misgivings about having them ranked at all. I know it was only Florida State that they played, and the Noles may be just as mediocre as they were lately under Bobby Bowden, but Oklahoma did what they were supposed to do against a team like that. In a young season that has seen a lot of losses and "meh" performances by top teams, the win against FSU was one of the more impressive ones anybody has notched.
  6. Wisconsin
  7. Texas
  8. Nebraska
  9. Florida - They have simply "out-talented" a couple bad teams. There's something to be said for that, but there's also something to be said for probably being 0-2 if their opponents had been worth a damn.
  10. Texas Christian
  11. Boise State - Welcome to BCS football, Boise State. Might wanna do something about that schedule of yours if you don't want people judging your team based on what your Week 1 opponent does the rest of the year.
  12. Arizona
  13. South Carolina - I said last week it was probably a cameo, but I hadn't seen Lattimore run. If Spurrier and Garcia don't lose their minds, Lattimore might be able to carry them to a New Year's Day bowl.
  14. Penn State - Especially with the turnover in the bottom end of the poll this week, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to teams that lost to other ranked teams (unless they got their dicks sanded like FSU) - especially ones that lost to teams ranked way ahead of them.
  15. Miami (FL) - See also PSU. However, having seen both play (and knowing what PSU does on a yearly basis) I moved them just below PSU because I think PSU could beat them.
  16. Arkansas
  17. Auburn - Not very impressive in their win over Mississippi State. They had an opportunity to move up further.
  18. Utah
  19. Pittsburgh
  20. Michigan State - I'm not sure they'll hold on to their ranking, but we're running out of decent-looking 2-0 teams at this point.
  21. Stanford
  22. Georgia - They might yet be decent. If not for all of the other losses around them in the polls, they might have dropped all the way out though
  23. Air Force - I ranked Washington in the preseason, who lost to BYU. I ranked BYU last week, who lost to Air Force. Who does Air Force play next week?
  24. California
  25. Boston College

Out:

  • Virginia Tech - If they gave an automatic berth to the ACC Championship game to James Madison does anyone think they might sell it out for a change? At the very least we might see some better football than anybody else in that conference might be able to offer.
  • Florida State - The Noles got reamed so bad they'll be walking funny this week.
  • Georgia Tech - Really?
  • Brigham Young
  • West Virginia - Ugly. Lucky. Big East.

Still Not In:

  • USC - last week it was because I?m not including them in my poll this year. This week it's because they suck.
  • Notre Dame - has any team ever completed a hail mary pass that went ten rows deep into the stands?
  • Michigan - Top 25?! How about doing something above and beyond what you did last year, when you tied for last place in the Big Ten?

Again just a reminder for folks to post their ballots AFTER the poll comes out...in this thread each week, not in the other one...it's much easier to dissect and analyze that way.

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Oklahoma
4. TCU
5. Oregon
6. Boise State
7. Iowa
8. Nebraska
9. Texas
10. Florida
11. Wisconsin
12. Utah
13. Arkansas
14. LSU
15. South Carolina
16. Michigan
17. Auburn
18. Stanford
19. Miami (FL)
20. Arizona
21. Houston
22. West Virginia
23. Oregon State
24. California
25. Air Force Academy

I moved OU way up and dropped a crap-load of teams. I was harsh on, say, Penn State, who lost at #1 Alabama, but they will be on their way back in I imagine as some of the pretenders drop out. Still, that game could have been much worse and I don't see them as top 25 material after almost being down to YSU at halftime. I kept WVU in, but dropped USC, despite both winning. USC looks like dogmeat. I think Boise at 9 is a bit harsh, but I did drop them out of the top 5 this week.

JMU vote... cute. I didn't know Doug Lesmerises participated in the BP Poll.

For the life of me, I don't understand voting for Southern Cal. Maybe those people didn't watch. I can't blame them for not wanting to hear Petros Papadakis I guess. However, they are getting by on the minimum against bad teams, and got a lot of help against Virginia.

Yeah I don't get why USC is ranked either. They aren't that good and its not like their head coach is Urban or Nick either. Somebody make their case.

Well, right now there are about 10 really good teams, 10 pretty good teams, and about 20 teams that might end up being pretty good but it's too early to tell. USC is in the last category along with Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, North Carolina, etc. With Minnesota, Washington State, and Washington next on their schedule, we might not know for a while where USC fits into the picture.

Currently I have only undefeated teams in the rankings (or at least I hope that I do). I feel its too early in the season to "justify" losses at all, even if Miami loses to Ohio State etc. There are teams who haven't lost yet who deserve to be ranked for at least one week. I think that by next week's ballot I will have to evaluate the best teams with one loss, but perhaps not.

Rank Team Conference
1 Ohio State Big Ten; To me, they are the most complete team currently with a dominant defense and a rising offense. Supposing that they fix their special teams' coverage and they are going to be unbeatable.

2 Alabama SEC; The Tide are looking good so far, but their secondary was torched for yardage by Penn State's freshmen QB Bolden (the Lions shot themselves in the foot too many times).

3 Nebraska Big-12; The 'Huskers are consistent so far. Which justifies their #3 spot better than Oklahoma and others.

4 Oregon Pac-10; Ducks offense is going to be a dominant force to reckon with.

5 Iowa Big Ten
6 Oklahoma Big-12
7 Boise State WAC
8 Florida SEC
9 Wisconsin Big Ten
10 Texas Big-12
11 Texas Christian MWC
12 Utah MWC
13 Louisiana State SEC
14 Houston C-USA
15 Auburn SEC
16 Stanford Pac-10
17 Texas Tech Big-12
18 Michigan State Big Ten; Spartans are looking good so far against meager opposition. The Irish next week should be a good indicator.

19 South Carolina SEC; I've been burned a bit too much by South Carolina in the past to rank them too high to start the season. They play the games that can change that perception real fast, but I'll wait and see.

20 Arizona Pac-10; Great match-up with Iowa. We'll see if they can keep it close, could be a good indicator of their Pac-10 chances.

21 California Pac-10
22 West Virginia Big East; implosion imminent.
23 Arkansas SEC

24 Michigan Big Ten; When Denard Robinson plays against the Big Ten we shall see how real they are this season. He has not yet done what Forcier accomplished last season, 4-0 start, but he also hasn't yet collapsed to a 5-7 overall record either. Their depth is thin, and if they stay healthy they should get to 8 or 9 wins. But when can any team stay healthy in the Big Ten?

25 Air Force MWC; They could be a dominant force in the Mountain West, conference-champion dominant. BYU was a great win, but they face the harder opponents against Utah and TCU, not to mention the Commander-In-Chief trophy games against Army and Navy.

Nebraska is not a top 10 team. Not even their own fans think so (they had a poll on Huskerboard.com), mostly because of their offense, which is not only not very talented, but they make a lot of mistakes (I think they had four fumbles against Idaho). They are way over-hyped.

I have them #9 - not as high as some but still inside the top ten. It's tough right now because I think there are a lot of teams that are not quite worthy of being ranked #3 - #7, but seem like they fit in nicely at #8 - #15. You can't leave spots blank on your ballot though so in my mind they'll have to do to fill that spot until we get a few more weeks into the season.

Exactly. Gotta put somebody up in the top-5.

Great idea...

They should make the REAL pollsters do this.
EXPLAIN how and why they're ranking who, where...

At THIS time, I agree with Miami at #15-20, until they prove they can do something...I think Neb is overrated at anything above #10. I'm also still not convinced Florida is a top-ten team yet...USC always looks half-confused...

Oregon looks to be the shit this year.

Early polls are tough - haven't really seen enough action, or challenges, to ascertain who's a contender, and who's a pretender.

Boise State, I'll defer. I WILL say this:
What if ANY of the upper echelon teams of the perennial tough conferences (B10/B12/SEC) had a schedule like THEM? (EDIT: WTF was I thinking? Like the ACC deserved to be in those parentheses...)

Shit - it'd be a STEAMROLLER...

Can you imagine OSU and Boise State swapping conferences?
Talk about a 20-year consecutive run of Conference Championships...
Their SOS is going to SO bite them in the ass come October...

Take 2009 as an example:
8 of their 14 opponents had a winning record...
Their opponents total 2009 W-L was 84-91, and that's getting one HELL of a boost from Oregon/TCU's combined 22-4 (after bowl games) for the year!
Before their bowl game, it was 72-90!
Remove Oregon from the mix, and it's 62-87!

As many people have said over, and over again, any college team, rampaging through a high school conference, is gonna look GOOD as shit.

I have to agree. After Alabama and Ohio State, in whatever order, it is tough to find a team to rank 3 - 7 or so. You have to put someone there, but after the top two, it's more or less a grab bag of teams which have significant identifiable flaws. It's usually tougher to dig up schools to put in the middle of the rankings, 10 - 20ish... this year it seems you've got 20 team vying for those 10 spots. And they're falling in from the top, not rising from the bottom.
