Looking at the poll, I think Florida is a little high at 5, but no one has really stuck their noses out and established themselves worthy of being #4 on down in my opinion. There are a lot of #8-12 type teams but very few teams playing elite football. I'm surprised Missouri isn't getting more support...Penn State to me being in the top 25 at the moment, well, I don't see it after Saturday's game, but that can easily change now that conference play starts (that said, at Iowa this week, they'll be out of the polls anyway I think).

My poll is an abomination this week, as it includes the same 25 teams as the loathsome AP poll, although in a slightly different order (I checked it against theirs to see if I left somebody out completely, and was aghast when I saw that). I'm going to give a little rundown on each team since we are 1/3rd of the way through the season for a lot of teams, and can probably finally make a few conclusive statements about them.

1. Alabama (4-0) - They have the most talent on paper, and have proved the most on the field so far. Ingram and Richardson have done nothing to dissuade me from thinking they are the 2 best backs in CFB, period. They are in the midst of the toughest part of their schedule right now, but if they make it through with 1-loss I would still put them in the BCSNCG.
2. Ohio State (4-0) - 2nd most talented team on paper and have been awesome so far. That Miami win is going to look better and better as the season goes along methinks. 3rd in the nation in scoring offense (who would have ever thought w'?d say that about a Tressel team?). Need to shore up ST play, however.
3. Boise State (3-0) - Finally bumped them up here since they have proved a bit more that some other top 10 teams. This won?t last due to their weak schedule the rest of the way, with only Nevada as a legit threat to beat them (and possibly go undefeated if they do). They are really good though.
4. Oklahoma (4-0) - They have played a pretty tough schedule, and smashed the best team they've played. Their other games have been quizzically close. Texas this weekend, OK St. and the Big 12 CG are their only big tests left. Seem to have a little 2002 Buckeyes in them.
5. TCU (4-0) - I'm not convinced that they will go unbeaten in a relatively tough MWC. But they do have a chance to put together a better resume than BSU. Dalton is pretty clutch.
6. Nebraska (4-0) - Good defense, good running game, good schedule. Go to KSU in a battle of unbeatens and have Texas at home, and that's about it before the Big 12 title game and what could be a battle of unbeatens against Boomer Sooner.
7. Oregon (4-0) - They are who I thought they were. ASU offense took it too them although they did force some INTs. Offense is as good as you'll find in CFB though. Pac-10 is pretty tough sledding this year though, but they and Stanford appear to be the teams to beat.
8. Florida (4-0) - For all the hand-ringing everyone was doing after their first couple games, this team has still won all 4 games by at least 2 TD's. They have a great, playmaking defense and an explosive, if inconsistent, running game. Bama game this weekend should be a good one.
9. Stanford (4-0) - I thought they were a year away from winning the conference. I was wrong, they are ready to win it this year. Smashed through a respectable early season schedule, their showdown with Oregon should be a barnburner.
10. Wisconsin (4-0) - Haven't played great, but haven't played crappy either. ASU showed they were a pretty legit win after giving Oregon a run for their money. Clay can run on anyone. Oct. 16th can't some soon enough.
11. Utah (4-0) - Utes won a close opener against a mediocre Pitt. Rolled against crap teams since. 2nd half of their season is tough, but they are good enough to make it to 11-1.
12. Arizona (4-0) - Very nice win against Iowa and avoided the trap against Cal. Not quite on Stanford or Oregon's level IMO, but I wouldn't be surprised if they beat 1 and force at 3 way champion.
13. LSU (4-0) - They are playing some Al Davis football (as in "just win, baby."). Will be interesting to see how they do against the other big 3 in the SEC West.
14. Miami (FL) (2-1) - If Harris ever learns to take care of the ball, they will be a NC caliber team. D is vastly improved from last year. Tough schedule the rest of the way, but should go 11-2 with an ACC crown.
15. Arkansas (3-1) - Were the better team for about 53 minutes Saturday, then Mallet turned into the current form of Carson Palmer. He is a beast though, and everyone will struggle to stop that O if he doesn't turn it over.
16. Auburn (4-0) - Cam Newton is legit. They're solid all around. Tough sledding in the SEC West though.
17. Iowa (3-1) - Oh what the pressures of expectations seem to do to Iowa teams. Still a really good team with a really good D-line. Stanzi is the x-factor though. He wins and loses you games.
18. Michigan State (4-0) - Have a great running back duo, a solid, experienced QB, and a tough D. Wish OSU played them (and NW) this year. Love Dantonio.
19. USC (4-0) - Unimpressive their first 3 weeks, started to look like an SC team against Wazzu, but that isn't saying much. Don't know if they can run with the top 3 in their conference this year.
20. Texas (3-1) - Can believe they lost after the poor efforts earlier this season. Can't believe they lost by that bad to a 1-2 team. Way too talented to be playing like that, but I think we?ll see a good effort Sat.
21. Michigan (4-0) - Well the Denard Robinson show hit its first speed bump of injury Saturday, and there will be more to come I'm sure. Defense still stinks, but the O is dangerous if he is in. Should be an interesting Big 10 season for them.
22 Penn State (3-1) - Only lost to Bama. Have looked average against bad competition since. Bolden needs to show improvement or the Big 10 will rough them up.
23. Nevada (4-0) - Their QB is Denard Robinsonesque. Really lit up Cal. Should run the table in the WAC until they play BSU, in a game where I will become a huge Wolfpac fan.
24. NC State (4-0) - Russel Wilson is sweet. They have beat respectable competition, and the ACC stinks. Really good shot at a nice season.
25. South Carolina (3-1) - Spurrier has talent, but they still can't avoid losses in the SEC. Still have to play @ Florida and Bama. Sorry, Ball Coach.

So more interestingly...where did the LSU #1 go? They beat a top 25 team in West Virginia and that voter though that meant they should move down???
I vote based on a simple point formula: 2 points for a win over a top-ten team; 1.5 points for a win over a ranked team; 1 point for a win over a "major" team (ACC, SEC, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac Ten); .75 points for a win over a mid-major (Big East, Notre Dame); .5 for a win over any other FBS team; 0 points for a win over an FCS team; -.5 points for a loss to a top 10 team; -1 point for a loss to a ranked team; -1.5 points for a loss to a major team; -1.75 points for a loss to a mid-major team; -2 points for a loss to any other FBS team; -2.5 points for a loss to an FCS team.

The theory is to vote on what the teams actually do, not what I think they will do. Also, I feel that a one-point win over Arizona State is worth more than two-point win over Cincinnati ... and a two-point win over Cincinnati is worth more than a 53-point win over EMU ... and a 53-point win over EMU is worth more than a 67-point win over Austin Peay.

I voted for LSU #1 last week because they had the most points (3.5 for LSU, 3.0 for Alabama). This week, Alabama and LSU had the same number of points (5.0 for each), so I voted Alabama #1 because I feel that they would (and will) win the head-to-head match-up. LSU got my #2 vote.

BTW FWIW I will modify my point system for the final poll so that it weights opponents' rankings at the time the game was actually played, and at the end of regular season. I will also make wins and losses more "rank specific", so that beating the #4 team in the country will count for more than beating the #9 team in the country (right now, each is worth 2 points). However, there is no point getting that specific right now, when the rankings don't really mean anything.

Here is my poll this week. Obviously, there are some outliers (LSU, OSU, Oregon, Nebraska, Auburn, USC), and some quality teams with a loss (Iowa, Miami, Texas) haven't been able to get back into the top 25 yet, but several of my picks are fairly close to the norm. With the start of conference play, the major teams will start accumulating points more rapidly, and teams like Boise State, TCU, and Utah will drop down. By the end of the year, my ballot should look pretty close to the "typical" ballot.

1. Alabama
2. LSU

Just not a lot to take from the weekend other than the Texas WTF. I think I'm in agreement with BuckLion about PSU. I ranked them, but I don't think I will next week because they will lose to Iowa. I am happy that the only out of conference losses from decent Big 10 teams came from away games against teams in the top 15.

Big 10
OSU 4-0
Wisconsin 4-0
scUM 4-0
Michigan State 4-0
Northwestern 4-0
Iowa 3-1
PSU 3-1
(Indiana 3-0!!!??)
It seems like most years 2 of the Wisky, Sparty, NW would drop a game they shouldn't. Congrats on not looking terrible this year Big 10!

Now every league will start conference play. We'll know a little more about everyone but maybe the OU - UT game. I don't know when its going to happen but I expect Alabama to drop a game. Everyone gets a bye before facing them (it seems). Mark Ingram is amazing, though. I still like watching them run the ball. I had OSU number 1 in my preseason poll and switched to Bama in Week 1 or 2. My copy of my week one ballot is gone. I'm a fan of watching them. Even if Saban is a snake. Other than Bama I'm not convinced there are other great SEC teams. I do think Auburn, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Florida are all good teams, but flawed. LSU baffles me. Les Miles might be lucky he was facing one of the few worse game coaches, Bill Stewart, and a depleted UNC team. I'm ranking them where they are because they do have the wins, but I like all the other listed SEC teams better, right now.

Stanford moves into my top 5 - not because they handled ND, but because their 35-0 stomping of UCLA now looks a lot better.

06. TCU

No Texas - why rank them and not Kansas State, when Kansas State beat UCLA and is undefeated?

That's fair, but it seems your formula is circular. You're using rankings (whose is not clear) to calculate rankings. You give two points for a win over a top ten team, but top ten as defined by whom? Similarly, 1.5 for a win over a ranked team - ranked by whom? Etc.

To piggyback a bit this method also provides no context. IS Stanford's demolishing of Notre Dame the same as MSU and scUM's squeekers?

Good point about K-State. I'll keep an eye on them next week and they'll shoot up quick if they keep winning.
