BP Poll Week 2 (Long Overdue)

As was I. Can anyone seriously say that LSU, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida are better than us just because we lost a heartbreaker to the #2 team? If Craig James can keep us at #3, then I see no reason why any unbiased Buckeye fan could, too.

The game I saw on Saturday really deflated my view of the team. Most people look at how close the game was to say that we should stay high...I looked at what we should have done with the opportunities we had. Based on what I saw (especially from the QBs and DBs), I feel like there are anywhere from 5-10 teams that would beat us right now.

Just because we are all trying to be unbiased, doesn't mean this isn't still a very subjective process. Two people can be completely honest in how they feel about a team and be 10-15 spots apart...polls are meant for people to represent their opinion, not be a conformist. If someone disagree's with you for having Ohio State #3...screw em.

Come on guys...it's not about where you think teams should or will finish at the end of the season...it's about where you think they are right now, based on all of the games played so far...that's what sets our poll apart from the crappy media and ridiculous coaches polls.

Yes, I am a voter, and yes, I am one of the people who had Notre Dame 10th. Do I think they'll finish there? No, but even if you can't stand the Notre Dame program, one has to admit that winning two road games over two BCS teams last year (I know, I know, Pitt) is much more impressive than what a lot of the teams that are ranked below them have so far.
It's also why Ohio State is still 8th...play tough teams, and get respect...even if you lose (I had us 8th).

Exactly, Bucklion. Polls should be based on how teams have performed so far, not some half-assed guess where each individual feels they will end up at the end of the season. Looking at a team's remaining schedule should be almost meaningless. When a team loses, or struggles against a lesser opponent, they should be moved down; but I believe it's unfair to lower someone's ranking because you expect them to lose a game later in the year. On the same token, if a team beats a top opponent later in the year, they should be moved up.

When TCU won at Oklahoma, I put them in the top 15 or so. I didn't expect them to stay there, but they deserved that ranking after 1 week. Now that they have lost to SMU, I dropped them out.

I believe that a significant problem with the media polls is that voters feel that they should be voting based on how they think teams will end up. That prevents voters from moving teams around as much as they should.

Years ago, a team could jump from #8 to #1 in one week, without the #1 team losing. That wouldn't happen now because voters are so reluctant to show real movement in their votes. It's like they hate to admit to a mistake. They think if they had Oklahoma at #7, and they lost to an average team, they should still rank fairly high them because they can't be that much worse than #7.

I agree completely with Bucklion. After the preseason poll, which is mostly guesswork, I rank teams strictly on games that have been played so far this season.

If you'll look at my previous polls, I had Miami ranked higher than everyone else and didn't expect much from Florida State. When FSU beat them head to head (based only on a blown special teams play), Miami plummeted from 4 to 13 and FSU went from 15 to 12. Then Michigan and Iowa both played really poorly in losses and dropped.

Miami and Florida State both looked spectacular on defense. We looked less spectacular on defense, but I took the opponent into consideration and gave us the edge. Truthfully, I'd like Florida State a little lower, but I can't stand putting a team behind another that they just beat head to head.

For one of the most active posters on this thread and the harshest critics of everyone else's polls, I have yet to see your's posted. The rest of us manage to look past our hatred for Notre Dame and can at least admit that they are a top 25 team based on what they've done so far. They looked unstoppable at Pitt and beat a top 5 Michigan team @ the big house.

...So much for unbiased.

You lost a nail-biter to #2 so why shouldnt you stay at #3! Can't disagree with ya Mili.

As for Oiler I can somewhat see his point as I came away from the Michigan game sort of disapointed in ND's over-all performance.

I thought it was interesting that Texas took a #1 vote from USC. (I don't really care who it was. I just thought it was interesting.)

The thing about Ohio State dropping (from #3 after losing to #2) is one of the many things I don't like about human polls. It's a game you're supposed to lose (it should be close), and you DO lose (it was close), and they "punish" you for it.

Yeah - I know. The rankings aren't really rewards or punishment. But they still kinda are.

But I'd probably contradict myself, if I were a voter. I'd have a tough time keeping a team #3 after a loss. But if they lost to #2 or #1 in a game like last Saturday, I don't think I'd drop them below #5.

Anyway, enough rambling from me tonight.

(I can see your party now::groove: :groove: :groove: )

relax, I was half kidding. I'll be the last one to call out anybody's poll while being serious. This statement however....
Miami and Florida State both looked spectacular on defense.
.....has me in disbelief. I didn't see spectacular anything during that game.

I don't think anybody should publish their polls, which is why I didn't publish mine. But if you want to know....

  1. USC
  2. Texas
  3. LSU
  4. VTech
  5. OSU
  6. ASU
  7. Fla
  8. Tenn
  9. TT
  10. Cal
  11. UGA
  12. Bama
  13. UVA
  14. Iowa
  15. ND
  16. MSU
  17. FSU
  18. Mich
  19. Purdont
  20. Miami
  21. Clem
  22. OU
  23. GTech
  24. Auburn
  25. BC
Right after submitting this, I thought more about the FSU & Miami game and realized I wanted to switch Miami & FSU. Depending on their play next week, that will be reflected in my next poll.

Just one question for CleveBucks:

If Ohio State were to play Notre Dame (at Notre Dame), who do you believe would win?

at Notre Dame? Probably the domers. Tressel's teams rarely play well on the road. ND completely shut down a pretty good scum offense in a^2.

I think in general people get too worked up over polls in early and mid season. As I said, my poll is very fluid, so it's not like I'd leave ND high if they look like shit a couple weeks in a row. Likewise, if OSU shows some life on offense a few weeks in a row, they'd be back in my top 5. I just don't think with the QB situation the way it is, that OSU is a top 5 team. They may very well be in a couple weeks.
