BP Poker Buffs Question

Listening to Eddie Money
[FONT=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica][FONT=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]This past Sunday I went to Bellefontaine for their fundraiser to the Football boosters and ponied up the 50 bucks to enter the first real tourney of my life. Aside from playing $10 6 or 7 man sit and go's with friends, and play money online this was the first real experience for me. Must say I was glad with how i performed, despite missing the money by 3 spots, and missed getting a free roll to next months tourney by 2 spots, I finished 13th out of a field of 87 people.

I maintained a pretty good chip count throughout however, (was chip lead for at least 1/3 maybe clost to half the tourney). Didn't really play any bad hands save for a few, just caught a couple bad beats.

Final hand i played I was under the gun with the blinds at 1,00 and 2,000. I had about 2500, or 3500 in chips. I looked down to see K,J off suit. With the blinds coming to me next and basically putting me all-in, I decided to make my stand, I pushed all in to be called by K,Q off. Neither of us improved and he outkicked me.

How did everyone else do in their first goes in tourneys?

I was in a Knox County tournament ($50 buy-in) and got my ass handed to me the first time  But I was only 19 and hadn't exactly played a lot of poker.

So I decided to actually learn some of the game and I narrowly missed winning the ESPN online poker tournament 2 years ago by 4 spots...with that came a berth in the WSOP....

Sounds like you did pretty well.

King-Jack can be a trap hand.....

Yeah, I was satisfied with the way I played. Didn't bluff a single time in the tourney. At my 1st table was dealt big slick three times in a row. made some bank there. Another hand i nearly doubled up on was getting Q,9 off in the BB. a small raise I had to call. Flop top two pair, Q,9. I bet the whole way with lower cards coming the rest of the way and the guy was chasing A,Q.

I felt I had to push with K,J because I had developed a tight image, and figured I could snatch the blinds, if not be in a decent situation to double up. Live and learn...off to a Reece's tourney this weekend :-D I caught the bug now.

So ten out of 87 are in the money? Seems like a lot. I've played in maybe twenty, and have never finished out of the top 1/3. At the same time, I've never won either. My highest finish was fourth, and did that three times.

Ten out of 87 seems like a lot of winners for a small field. I've been in several tourneys of over 300 people, with only the top eight or ten being in the money. Finishing in the top 1/3 doesn't sound great, but in a decent sized tournament, that means that over 200 people left before I did.

Anyway, a good start for you. Just remember to never be pot commited. :wink2:

Yea they took 34 of the entry for the prize pool, 1000 to first 500 for second, 325 for third and so on down to getting your entry back for 10th. It paid a lot, but the more people they pay, the more people enter, thus increasing the money the football boosters received. Made sense in a way.

if they only took 34 for the pool where did the other 16 go?

First and only tourney I have ever played in I placed second, behind Peach... I think we were the only two girls playing and we took all the guys!

I settled for third because I thought you two were going to jello wrestle.... Unless it was Timbuck2 who came in 3rd, in which case, I settled for 4th for the same reason, having already convinced Timbuck2 to do the same...

Thats not bad, and congrats. My first tournament I didn't do too well in. I have played a bunch since then and realized that more times than not your not going to do to well. To do well in a tournament you need a number of things to happen. 1. DON'T PLAY STUPID (no stupid bluffs or calls when they are not called for) 2. Don't take bad beats. (nothing you can do to prevent them, but they will happen) 3. The hardest thing to accomplish, YOU NEED TO GET HANDS AT THE RIGHT TIME. Tournaments are fun to play, and take skill, but you also need to get a certain amount of luck to do well. (More so than a cash game or sit and go)

I hate having two pair

You have to rotate your styles....tight sometimes, aggressive others and in between most of the time.

I have made the final table where I have only had maybe 5 playable hands. (Didn't play stupid). DOn't worry about bad beats at all. Nothing I can do about it. There is no way you have control over #3 above unless you're the dealer, and a cheater.

of the $50 entry fee, 34 went to that days prize pool, 6 to the final table (top 6 from each of the three tourneys plus two wildcards raffled off made final table) and 10 went to the boosters. They had 71 at the first one in Dec., 87 at this one and they didnt put this one in the paper. After this weekend, the prize pool for the final table was up to 912 dollars, with one more tourney to qualify.

You had a decent amount of chips that you could have let the blinds hit you. It all depends. It is no way a poor play. A lot of it depends on how the table has been playing as well. You will run into hands that have you dominated sometimes, even when it's not your fault.
