And they're worth the money. The majority (about 30) of our servers are Dell. The few other non-Dell servers (five or six...Compaq, IBM, Gateway) suck. I've been working here for almost 40 months, and have had no problems with any Dell server...none. The two that we've had crash were Compaq and Gateway. I've bought nothing but Dells for my personal use since I've been buying on-line (four PCs) and have had no problems with them. The only problem I've had with any Dell was the notebook my daughter got three years ago...when her motherboard died, they did a 6-day turnaround (keep in mind we're in Hawaii...2,500 miles from the mainland) and it worked great ever since.

Everything there looks good except the RAM. I've talked to the vBulletin software developers, and our stats engine programmer, and we need a lot of RAM. 8GB is the number most often tossed out. It's been suggested I could survive with 4GB, but that I'd be having to add more in relatively short order. And several said "shoot for 12-16". RAM is expensive. I eyeball 8 as the magic number, but I'm hoping to get more perspective on this issue from folks around here (like you, KentState, Cleve, anyone else with some IS/IT background) with a better grasp than my own.

The current machine is a dual 1GHz P3 rig, with 1GB ram and the 3x18gb 15k RPM drives. It's choking hard to the point of brief failures during peak times, and we haven't plugged the stats engine yet.

On another note, I'm starting a new thread in a few moments. I'll link to it from here. In there, I'm announcing who the winner is, what he's decided to do with the tickets, and (with a nod from him) probably out the original donor.

So if we can live with 3 GB ram we could get off with 1900

once you add the mega ram ....

you cross into major bucks even for a refurbished sysytem

have the school buy it and sell it to Clarity for $3301.. and since the check will be written to a school... it'll go as a contribution...

but first we need to get Clarity's fund from $300 to $3300...

We've still got the Spring and Fall drives. My goal is to have us in or near a new box before next season gets underway.

Didn't mean to give the impression that this is something that has to happen tomorrow.

$390 is a great start. $400 if kn1f3party's bid on the tickets stands as the winner (which would be cool, I don't want to see those go too high). We brought in around $2k in the Fall drive this past year. Some of the Spring $ is already spoken for, but we can take another big bite out of the machine then.

We're not in crisis mode or anything, just need to be prepared for more growth, and the introduction of the long-overdue stats engine.
