Boycott Scotts Due to Smoking Policy

Wait - are we talking about people being fired for stupidity? I'm all in favor of that. In fact, I'm in favor of people being shot for stupidity.
Now we're getting somewhere. 'Too dumb to live' should be a valid defense in a muder trial; you've got your 'guilty', your 'not guilty', your 'insanity', etc ... 'too dumb to live' should be another option.

How do you plea?

Not guilty, your honor. You see, my victim was 'too dumb to live.'

Oh ... oh, OK. Please explain ...

Thanks Stoo... no pun anticipated....

My hearts not much in this debate. I do think you're underestimating the damage that cars have on health though. Maybe if it was the middle of the summer and smog was everywhere I'd have better luck convincing you.

You don't have to convince me that auto emissions and smog are bad to people, animals, plants and buildings. They are (as a resident of the east side of Cincinnati, I'm well aware of how air quality can affect a person). However, it's a completely separate issue from an employer screening people for smoking cigarettes and the potential ill effects of second hand cigarette smoke. Comparing the two forms of smokes does nothing but muddle up the debate.

Well, not really Stoo.. Lets say we were talking about an employer saying, we've decided the health risks associated with emissions from automobiles increases our health insurance costs over time to the point that now, unless you walk or ride a bike, you can't work here.

I doubt there would be many supporters of the idea, and actually the benefits might actually be more signifigant.

actually, those people are generally promoted.

27, what is alcohol's benefit to society?

Unless you're smoking in a closed room with absolutely no one around, you're probably harming someone at some point (and that's just with smoke...imagine how bad you stink when you smoke).

stoo, im not a smoker and not particularly fond of the habit. but, where are you legally allowed to smoke at this point outside of your home? just 2 weeks ago i saw a petition calling for smoking to be banned in an entire county. besides, second hand smoke is irrelivant in this conversation as they are not punishing the employee if they do damage to others. there is no "you can smoke under these guidlines" stipulation. its an "if you smoke your gone" policy. they are conscerned with their employee making a claim. not some guy at target who happened to breathe in someones second hand smoke.

And two, sure illegal immigration hurts health care costs, but that doesn't diminish the fact that reducing the number of smokers would be very helpful in keeping costs down

*shrug* smokers pay for their insurance. what else you gonna tell me i can't do? am i no longer permitted to scuba dive? getting attacked by a shark would sure cost a lot of money. that would definitly be a burden on my insurance company. my only conscern here is at what point do you no longer have the right to tell me how to live my life? i pay my taxes. i pay for my medical. what right does some insurance company have to tell me i can't do something? why are you hassling people who are paying their way yet doing nothing about the people getting a free ride? i guess i don't feel enough pitty for insurance companies.
