Boxing Should Be Banned

boxing is great. they need to ban smokes before they ban boxing and that shit ain't gonna happen.

man did the sam peter vs. klitschko (sp?) fight suck ass. wladimir would throw one punch and hold. 12 of the most boring rounds i have ever saw.

huge fan of sam peter, rough to see him lose a lame ass fight.
Yea, I like that idea about banning smokes before boxing since way more people die from smoking those tobacco fuses. Besides I think that boxing might be my second favorite sport behind NCAA football . But I like watching the bantam and lightweights beat each other up more than watching the heavyweights do so.

Does anyone think that the problem is that athletes today and bigger and stronger. They have adapted faster than they should. The skull hasn't gotten any thicker, neither has the fluid your brain floats in.

Who really cares.

"Heavyweight Champion Of The World" used to be one on the greatest sports "titles" that one could own.

Does anybody, and I mean ANYBODY out there realistically think that 1 out of 100 people that you polled on the street tomorrow could name a Heavyweight Champion after Lennox Lewis. Try it at work tomorrow, try it on the street, try it anywhere, NO ONE will be able to name one.

I just stumbled on this thread. I can tell you that those people who want boxing outlawed or think its barbaric have very likely never participated in the sport even at the most rudimentary level. I have boxed (as an amatuer) for over fifteen years. I haven't had the time to stay in boxing shape for the last five, but I still spar from time to time. The sport keeps you in shape and teaches you determination and self reliance, not to mention self defense. As far as it being "barbaric", 99% of the boxers that I know (this one included) hug their opponent after a good fight. I wont try to explain why here as if you have never boxed, you will not get it. But if you have, you will know exactly what I am talking about.

If I have kids, my son (and maybe daughter) will learn how to box by the time they can tell what it should be used for. I sure wish I boxed earlier in life. Would have taught me a bunch early that I had to find out the hard way later.

As far as the pros, yes there are some dirty things going on. I also would never step in the ring w/o headgear on, but Im not getting $1 million per fight either. But at its core, it is one of the purest forms of physical human competition in existence. They dont call it "The Sweet Science" for nothing.

To me boxing is boring. I would much rather watch something like UFC where the fighters have to use their whole body to fight. UFC seems like more of a chess match with the 2 fighters trying to get the upper hand on each other. As mentioned in a previous post UFC is less dangerous because the fighters take less abuse to their heads. Boxers get hit in the head the entire fight, and if they get knocked down they are given a 10 count to get back up. If a UFC fighter gets knocked silly, they might take another shot or 2, but then the ref will stop it before any major damage is done.
I wouldn't say boxing should be outlawed, but I would be happy to see the dwindling following that boxing has move over to UFC type of fighting. If boxing would just eliminate the 10 count it would fix most of the problems. Don't call of the fighter until he has won. It is much less dangerous to take extra shot after you've been knocked silly than 100 extra shots when you are given time to recover.

UFC is like a glorified bar fight-kicking, tripping, choking, very little actual punching. Boxing is a beautiful thing to watch when two quality boxers are going mano a mano-it is about a test of skill, not just trying to subue your opponent any which way. Injury is a threat, no doubt about it, but any true boxing fan will tell you that is not the reason they watch.
