Boston Red Sox (9x World Series Champions)

Manny left the Red Sox with little choice. I don't think the team got nearly equal value, but it was necessary to get the cancer out of the dugout. He was going to be gone at the end of the season anyway; at least the Sox could control where he went (for the rest of the season, anyway; I still see him in pinstripes next year). Now the Sox can get on with playing ball. Bay may not be Manny, but I suspect he will play hard and be a good teammate.

I hope they go on a huge winning streak, and stick it to the Manny. :)

Yes they had no choice but to get rid of Manny, but they did nothing to upgrade their team for a playoff run. They don't think they can win it.

That's what I don't understand. It's like they're already handing to the Angels. We're a few games out of first, not 10 games. I really wanted them to strengthen the bullpen. They're expect a lot of innings out of their starters now. Arms will be tired come October.

The playoffs will be a whole different story. The Angels will have a very difficult time in the playoffs, contrary to what most believe. We'll see how Saunders and Garland pitch in the post-season. Sure, they're the AL favorites but alot of things happen in the playoffs.

Bay will be a good player but Manny scared the shit out of pitchers. I'm not sure what his numbers were in the playoffs the 2 years they won the Series but it seems like he had monster playoffs both years. Sure, he forced them to trade him, but boy can that sob hit!!!

It's not going to be the same going to see the Sox and Manny not being in the lineup. I understand they wanted to deal Manny because of the problems he was causing, but I think they could've done a little better than JUST Jason Bay. IMO, Bay won't come close to replacing Manny's bat, as not many can, but I think they could've gotten a lot more. I guess we'll see how this plays out......

From who? Under the circumstances, getting Bay was the best case scenario, especially considering that a day before they were supposed to be getting either Jeremy Hermida or Josh Willingham from Florida. Like I said before, I'd rather have Bay for the rest of this year and on the cheap next year than the two draft picks they would've otherwise gotten.

My problem with the deal is giving up Moss and Hansen along with Manny. Moss was the 5th OF at the time and was never going to play, but Hansen is a very, very talented pitcher. He's got control problems, but he's not even 25 yet and I don't think it was worth giving away that kind of ability just to get a deal done. Just shows how desperate the front office were.

This pretty much sums it up for me:

Manny on paper -- great hitter, mediocre fielder. Manny in reality -- great hitter when he was into the game, when he wasn't moody, when he wasn't being a petulant spoiled indulged baby, and still a mediocre fielder.

He wasn't respected by management.... wah, wah, wah ... disrespect? What? You get back what you give. Disrespect is clocking your own teammate in full view of the camera, disrespect is shoving a 64 year old man because you didn't get the tickets you wanted, disrespect is not bringing your A-Game for your team because you're in a personal snit about something. You want respect? Give some.

For $20 million he should play with busted knees nevermind a little phantom tenderness. Highest paid player on the Sox, a salary just $2 million shy of the Marlins ENTIRE TEAM and he's whining? He's the one who agreed not to discuss extensions until November -- and the SOX held him to that, so what.

Maybe the Sox should have just slapped him on the disabled list or injured reserve and let him cool his heels and then let him go in November -- but he was bringing down morale with his antics and perhaps it's best that he just get out of town (which is what he wanted anyway).

Good luck to you Manny, you were part of something amazing, pity you didn't get that -- your sun isn't rising, it's peaked and it's now slowly setting -- keep that in mind when you're negotiating. You aren't 21 ... or 25 ... or 27...30...35...you are 37 and while you might be in great shape and have a few good years yet, your brightest shiniest baseball moments are over. You were a great hitter for the Sox, but you let your ego run the game. Too bad.

Anybody else a little sad?

And Bay hits a 3-run homer tonight.

I love this guy. :)

Funny blog post snippet:

I am prepared to embrace the Jason Bay era. Although, with Manny's departure and Lugo's trip to the DL (get well never!) the team has gotten ... awfully white. This is exacerbated by Bay, Drew and Lowrie batting right in a row, they look like the world's most WASPy, non-threatening set of triplets.
