Ramirez had to go, and I think the Sox could've done a lot worse than Jason Bay. I think Bay's been under appreciated for a long, long time.

From who? Under the circumstances, getting Bay was the best case scenario, especially considering that a day before they were supposed to be getting either Jeremy Hermida or Josh Willingham from Florida. Like I said before, I'd rather have Bay for the rest of this year and on the cheap next year than the two draft picks they would've otherwise gotten.MD Buckeye;1220230; said:I understand they wanted to deal Manny because of the problems he was causing, but I think they could've done a little better than JUST Jason Bay. IMO, Bay won't come close to replacing Manny's bat, as not many can, but I think they could've gotten a lot more. I guess we'll see how this plays out......
Manny on paper -- great hitter, mediocre fielder. Manny in reality -- great hitter when he was into the game, when he wasn't moody, when he wasn't being a petulant spoiled indulged baby, and still a mediocre fielder.
He wasn't respected by management.... wah, wah, wah ... disrespect? What? You get back what you give. Disrespect is clocking your own teammate in full view of the camera, disrespect is shoving a 64 year old man because you didn't get the tickets you wanted, disrespect is not bringing your A-Game for your team because you're in a personal snit about something. You want respect? Give some.
For $20 million he should play with busted knees nevermind a little phantom tenderness. Highest paid player on the Sox, a salary just $2 million shy of the Marlins ENTIRE TEAM and he's whining? He's the one who agreed not to discuss extensions until November -- and the SOX held him to that, so what.
Maybe the Sox should have just slapped him on the disabled list or injured reserve and let him cool his heels and then let him go in November -- but he was bringing down morale with his antics and perhaps it's best that he just get out of town (which is what he wanted anyway).
Good luck to you Manny, you were part of something amazing, pity you didn't get that -- your sun isn't rising, it's peaked and it's now slowly setting -- keep that in mind when you're negotiating. You aren't 21 ... or 25 ... or 27...30...35...you are 37 and while you might be in great shape and have a few good years yet, your brightest shiniest baseball moments are over. You were a great hitter for the Sox, but you let your ego run the game. Too bad.
http://papelblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/then-why-was-it-all-so-good.htmlI am prepared to embrace the Jason Bay era. Although, with Manny's departure and Lugo's trip to the DL (get well never!) the team has gotten ... awfully white. This is exacerbated by Bay, Drew and Lowrie batting right in a row, they look like the world's most WASPy, non-threatening set of triplets.
"Trouble" being World Series wins? And Manny continues to burn bridges wherever he goes.
Having mixed feelings. Sad to see him go, but he caused so much trouble. I hope Bay is a good fit in Boston.
