as everyone has probably heard 4 or 5 times tonight if you are watching the Cubs Brewers game, the rumors about Manny going to Florida seem to make sense.

Supposedly allegedly they would trade ManRam to Florida for Jeremy Hermidia or Josh Willingham and then swap that player to Pittspuke to Jason Bay. The only thing that doesn't make a lot of sense is the 2nd part of that trade. Why give up on a guy like Hermidia who is only 24 and could be locked up long term for much less than Bay will get and who is also 6 years younger? He could be a corner outfielder in Boston for the next decade whereas Bay is likely going to go out West with his next contract......

another thing I find interesting is a failure of a GM like Steve Phillips saying who is doing good and who isn't as if it matters but that's another issue...

The Commissioner?s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal. There?s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-5 rights and no trade clause and I?ll admit not understanding the technicalities.

So here?s what Pee Wee Herman would call the ?big but.? The teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It?s expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There?s still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez?s remaining salary)
Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)
Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

The Palm Beach Post reported that the Sox had reached a tentative agreement with the Marlins and Pirates in which Manny Ramirez would go to Florida, the Marlins would send OF Jeremy Hermidia to Piitsburgh as part of a multiplayer package, and the Sox would receive OF Jason Bay and LHP Josh Grabow. My sources tell me that is not true, a deal has not been struck, but the sides continue to talk.
It may be getting close.

Here's a comparison of their 2008 numbers:
Ramirez ---- .299 BA, 20 HRs, 68 RBIs, .398 OBP, .529 SLG
Jason Bay -- .282 BA, 22 HRs, 64 RBIs, .375 OBP, .519 SLG
Grabow is 5-3 with a 3.19 ERA, and was 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA in July.

Not necessarily. We shall see.

I can't imagine a pitcher wanting to pitch to Ortiz now. If you put Ortiz on, you had to see Manny. It sounds like people will be throwing to Bay and avoiding Ortiz now.

Anyways, the numbers are staggering in regards to hitting in front of Manny. The guy has made careers for those hitting in front of him.

So basically, Manny Ramirez, two young, cost-controlled players with major league experience, and $7m for Jason Bay. Oh yeah, and they didn't strengthen the bullpen.

Whatever. I'd rather have Bay than compensation draft picks. He's only making $7.5m in '09, too.

Definitely would liked to have seen a relief pitcher in that deal. Our bullpen sucks Thump's one nut.

Don't need it. Red Sox aren't going to stretch for this year, they'll hope for the best and then start again next year. The Angels series probably helped get this done.
