Beckett was definitely on last night. Tons of first pitch strikes on the outside corners. Breaking ball looked very effective. I love the fact that the bullpen got more rest, JB threw just a tad over 100 pitches and the same pitching match-up is slated for a possible game 4.

Also good to see Big Papi with a nice start to the post-season. He says his knee feels much better after a cortisone shot.

A long way to go, but that was a good way to kick things off.

Beckett: 3 shutouts in 6 postseason starts, only 1 behind the record of Christy Mathewson. Impressive stuff.

First guy to pitch a shutout in his RedSox postseason debut since Babe Ruth in 1918. Whatever happened to that guy?

Was I the only one convinced that we'd see Gagne in the 9th? Beckett's stuff was slightly off in the 8th (comparatively speaking), and with a 4-0 lead and the urge to keep Beckett fresh, I was expecting Gagne to be put in with a tight leash. . . Of course, I am sure Beckett was on a tight leash himself.

Glad for the result, however.

I was surprised to see Beckett come out for the 9th (due to relatively high pitch count), but I didn't expect to see Gagne either -- maybe Papelbon or Okie Dokie. I'm glad we didn't have to use the bullpen!
