After giving his all to 'Sota, KG set to do same for C's

LONDON -- There was a respectful distance Monday between Kevin Garnett and the team for which he used to play, a moat of sorts in this land of castles and towers and palaces.
It was an attractive, cordial moat, replete with smiles, handshakes and man-hugs as the Boston Celtics walked into the magnificent O2 Arena in North Greenwich a few minutes before the Minnesota Timberwolves left. Andre Deloya, the Wolves' beloved physical therapist, visited for a couple of minutes as Garnett pulled on his sneakers. Trainer Greg Farnum, too. Coach Randy Wittman. Rashad McCants. Even Kevin McHale, the man who traded Garnett and ultimately let him down, stopped by.
"Getting used to all this green,'' Garnett said, the Celtics' future Hall of Fame power forward kidding the Celtics' most recent Hall of Fame power forward about the team's color scheme.

NBA notebook: Allen, Celtics shine on London stage

Somebody forgot to tell Ray Allen that the Celtics are Kevin Garnett's team.
Allen scored 28 points last night in London to lead the Celtics to a 92-81 exhibition win over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Garnett's first game against his former team.
Garnett, who spent 12 years in Minnesota, scored nine points in less than 30 minutes in London's O2 Arena, but he helped in other ways.
"The past is the past," Garnett said. "This is a new chapter in my life."
It seems Ricky Davis hasn't forgotten his old teammate, however.
"It was definitely a different experience seeing Kevin in green," said Davis, who scored a team-high 18 points. "I almost threw him the ball once, but then I saw that green jersey."

BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Celtics' new highlight video isn't a collection of great plays from their NBA-record 16 championships.
Not a series of clips from their more recent, forgettable seasons, either.
Instead, the theme was "a very eventful offseason," with scenes from the news conferences where Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen -- and Scot Pollard and Eddie House -- were unveiled as the saviors of the once-proud franchise.
And it's just what the sold-out crowd wanted to see.
"I felt like a young boy again, just trying to relax," Garnett said after scoring 13 points with eight rebounds to help the New Big Three dispatch the New York Knicks 101-61 in their new Boston Garden debut on Wednesday night. "I was excited to be here. I want everybody to know that my effort is going to be there night-in, night-out. I was more than excited tonight."

NBA: Acquisitions increase Celtics' expectations

MIAMI -- Doc Rivers is aware of the numbers. He can hardly escape them.
Every time the Boston Celtics coach contemplates the potential rewards of having Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen at his disposal, soon follows the reality of the numerous expectations.
"The pressure, honestly, will be on us," Rivers said. "Every coach wants this type of pressure. There are a lot of great coaches who have never had the opportunity to coach players like this."
The reasons for Rivers' enthusiasm are plentiful. There are the 21 combined All-Star appearances between Garnett, Allen and Pierce -- Boston's new Big Three. But it all will matter little in Beantown if the trio doesn't end a streak of 20 title-less seasons.

Garnett, Pierce spark Celtics' trampling of Wizards


BOSTON (AP) -- Kevin Garnett walked off the court raising his right index finger to the cheering crowd. By his side, Paul Pierce did the same -- a rare gesture of triumph for the long-suffering Celtics star.
There was 2:30 left in the game and Boston had been in control since the middle of the second quarter. The Celtics beat the Washington Wizards 103-83 on Friday night, opening their most promising season in Pierce's 10 years with the club.

"I'm at a place right now in my career, I couldn't ask for anything better," said Pierce, who led Boston with 28 points.

Garnett did it all -- 22 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and three steals -- in a dazzling debut with Boston. He was introduced to a standing ovation and left to cheers that echoed from the rafters where the team's 16 championship banners were hanging.
