Boston Celtics (17x NBA champions)

Just wait for the Heat series this year when Shaq and Jermaine O'Neal get eaten alive on pick and rolls.

Boston lost the mental edge they had on teams. No one is calling Kendrick Perkins Bill Russel but his no-nonsense attitude and physical play was something that brought an extra edge to that team.

I think you're under-estimating how important he was as an anchor to that team defensively. He protects the paint as well as anyone in the NBA today.

And enjoy the walking turnover that is Kristic.

I think you're overlooking the long term situations I described in my post and focusing solely on this season. I think everyone who is flipping out over the deal is doing it. There's nothing to suggest the deal was made for THIS season and no one is saying Krstic is Perkins' equal. Ainge has to consider the future as well.

Had Perkins signed his $30 million/4 year extension he is likely still a Celtic. The acquisition of Green and the 2012 first round pick are about life beyond 2011. Perkins is not currently playing as his surgically repaired knee is giving him problems. He can't protect anything when he's not playing and there's no telling if he'll ever be the defender he was before the injury. As such, there was no reason to offer him more than what he turned down.

Boston only won one title with him, but I'm sure this trade will be the popular rationale if they don't win without him. They're not a lock either way.

Oklahoma City signs Perkins for $36 million/4 years, or $6 million more than he was offered by Boston.

In other news, Troy Murphy signs with Boston. It'll be interesting to see if he's in playing shape at this point.

Then he'll fit in nicely with the O'Neals.

i think he will probably see maybe 10-15 tomorrow night and maybe average out around 18-20 minutes a game possibly...dont see him being the double double threat he was with Indy...and the guy is also a soft defender which could get him in the doghouse with doc rivers...but hes just one more guy for them who can play center so it works out

it doesn't matter who boston lines up at center against the heat. Dampier is horrible. Joel Anthony is a joke, and Z has had several DNP coaches' decision the last few weeks because he's totally spent already.

I disagree with this in a sense though. The beauty of Perkins was that he's a great help defender and protects the rim well. Even though Miami's centers are a joke, you still want an enforcer who can make LeBron and D-wade think twice about coming into the middle.

While Shaq can provide some of that, whoever Shaq guards will be undoubtedly be setting picks for the ball-handler to get Shaq into pick and roll defense.

Boston lost a lot defensively by giving up Perkins.

nobody makes lebron or wade think twice about driving. both get every whistle known to man, and they know it. with boston adding troy murphy to play the 4, they can line up garnett at center and totally negate miami's pick and roll.

Lots of chatter about the Knicks and Heat but Orlando beat both of them this week while the Celtics and Bulls look like the top teams in the East.

I'm glad Danny Ainge took Boston out of the title chase to land Jeff Green for the future...

The future is looking bright now.

[censored]ing awful trade....

That's funny--I thought a guy who resorts to clownish behavior like launching a towel into the air to distract an opposing player while shooting a free throw would make a great GM.

I love emotional reactions, especially when they're directed at me.

The Celtics went 34-9 their first 43 games this season - best in the eastern conference - amazingly, without the immortal Kendrick Perkins. They went 8-4 with him.

They also went 27-27 the last 54 games of the season last year, with Perkins. The only thing that salvaged the season was a nice playoff run, beating the Bulls who were too young, the Cavs who were too one dimensional, and the Magic who have never won anything. The lost to the Lakers in the Finals.

The current malaise couldn't possibly be the result of old age, the Heat coming together as a team or the Bulls growing up with Boozer and Noah back in the line up. Nope, it could only be one reason - the Perkins trade. :roll2:

The Celtics weren't going to pay Perkins more than $30 million/4 years. Had he taken it, the trade doesn't happen. He passed, they got an heir apparent to Pierce and a 1st round pick for next season, which will be pretty handy with the gray beards on the roster.

But yes, if only they had kept Perkins they were a shoe in to win it all this year. Just keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. The records don't support it.
