Now, this is more like it! My motolust has been re-awakened by photos of the new 1 Series Coupe!

Light, affordable, agile, sublime. The attributes that made BMW's 2002 an instant classic from its European premier in 1966 will do the same for the 128i and 135i models of the 2008 BMW 1 Series Coupe if they're as good by the seat of the pants as they are on paper.

Designed to fill the price space between two icons, the Mini Cooper and the 3 Series, the 1 Series features a lightweight aluminum front suspension and five-link rear axle, frameless doors, new L-shaped taillamps with LED highlights and corona daytime running lights ... the type of features that make more expensive Bimmers such magic.

We get the 300hp twin turbo engine!

With Bimmers it's about the driving experience. It won't DRIVE like a Mustang! :tongue2:
A new Mustang GT will set you back about $28K. A twin turbo 1 Series Coupe will set you back about $35K and have much better resale value. But, it really comes down to whether you like Bimmers or not.
As a Bimmer entry point it looks damn fine! $30K for a non-turbo I35.

Current BMW design is the work of Ohioan Chris Bangle.

Chris Bangle has a lot of enemies.

All right, in case you're not a BMW fanatic, you might not know that Bangle is the design boss of the BMW Group, which includes Mini and Rolls-Royce, and is responsible for the look of the new BMW 7 series, the new Z4 and now the car you see above, the newly fashioned 5 series.

These cars have made a lot of enemies for Bangle because thousands of BMW traditionalists worldwide dislike their sharper-edged format and have even signed online petitions like one titled "Stop Chris Bangle" to voice their disapproval.

Not that the American-born Bangle cares much. Certainly he understands the naysayers' fear that he has changed their beloved Bimmers (what fans call BMW cars; Beemers are BMW motorcycles) for the worse. But Bangle sincerely disagrees, and, moreover, he is fully backed by the weight of the BMW board of directors (BMW is still largely controlled by the will of the Quandt family), who specifically asked Bangle to move the company's image forward, whether traditionalists like it or not.

That is a shitty picture of the car.

It looks much nicer here.

I am not a huge fan of the Bangle effect, but it seems to me as if some of the radical stuff he was doing a few years ago on the z4 and 5 series are already starting to phase out.

Why not just get a nice certified used 3 series for the same money?

BMWs were dreadfully dull cars driven by boring people before Bangle arrived. Their designs under his watch have been innovative and dramatic. No one mistakes a modern BMW for any other car, and he's moved them to the forefront of automotive styling.

Just go look at some mid-90's 5 series to see a textbook definition of stale and uninspired.

He and Adrian Van Hooydonk are brilliant, and are combining to do some of the best design work anywhere.

I absolutely love the 1er, and I can't wait to test drive one at MAG.
