Wal-Mart dumps HD DVDs to back Blu-ray

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) has decided to exclusively sell high-definition DVDs in the Blu-Ray format, dealing what could be a crippling blow to the rival HD DVD technology backed by Toshiba Corp (6502.T).

The move by the world's largest retailer, announced on Friday, caps a disappointing week for HD DVD supporters, who also saw consumer electronics chain Best Buy Co Inc (BBY.N) and online video rental company Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) defect to the Blu-ray camp.

To follow up on that..

Report: Toshiba may end HD DVD format

TOKYO - Japanese electronics maker Toshiba might withdraw its HD DVD next-generation video format, Kyodo News agency reported Saturday.

The report cited unidentified individuals from the industry as saying Toshiba Corp. is reviewing its operations, with the timing of the withdrawal to be decided later, depending on U.S. demand for its HD DVD products and other factors.

Sony has been trying this shit for years. Pushing a medium/technology that is different and they have the same results......dead end.
Don't buy. The wave of the future is all hard drive media. And it's not that far off.

Betamax was much better than VHS. Another thing that hurt Betamax was marketing.

Another good Sony idea not marketed correctly. Sony is too big now and has lost their ability to design and successfully market new products.
Sony's right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.
Just look at how successfully Apple has designed and marketed technology.
Apple is killing Sony at innovation.

How is Sony bad for trying to put the best quality format out? You'd rather have HD DVD (an inferior format) just because it's not Sony? Then you turn around and say "another good Sony idea". News flash: There was no standard HD format for DVDs, so if you call Sony's Blu-Ray "different", the same could be said about Toshiba's HD DVD.

Personally, I don't care if a format is not the initial standard...I want the best possible quality at a competitive price in a format that will be long-term available, and that's what Sony's Blu-Ray is. I could give a shit that all the other companies had initially put their eggs in the HD DVD basket...not my fucking fault. I'm so glad that I now don't have to put up with a lesser quality product just because it's slightly cheaper and that most companies had jumped on its bandwagon.

VHS versus Betamax again - with a slight twist. I bought the Beta, everyone else went with the cheaper player with the longer tape recording time.

I'd figure that there will come a time very soon when the downloadable stuff we will get on demand will be in sufficient hi-def to satisfy us all, making the choice of DVD/HD versus Blu-ray as relevant as Beta or VHS is now....

Now if the library can provide downloadable content too... :banger:

Microsoft addresses possible end of HD DVD

SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft Corp. does not expect sales of its Xbox 360 game console to suffer if Toshiba Corp. discontinues HD DVD technology, Microsoft said in a statement on Monday.

(MSNBC.com is a Microsoft-NBC Universal joint venture.)

"We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace," the company said. "We will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player."

Not much news in this article, except that I didn't hear about this:

In January, a Microsoft executive said the company would be open to supporting Blu-Ray technology for its Xbox 360 machine.
