it's time for me to get a new phone, and the company pays my plan as long as it's just your normal phone (i have an envy now). i thought of a great idea where i get a blackberry and pay the $30 data charge, and the company pays the rest without even knowing i have a blackberry. it's bulletproof.

so my dilemma is I can have a free phone, or pay $30 a month to be that cool guy with the blackberry. it wouldn't be synced up to my email. so, are they worth it?
 
I picked up a Storm and love it. I had the old school blackberry before, so it's obviously a huge upgrade. I got Rhapsody which works great with it. If you're going to get a blackberry, now is a great time with the release of the Storm (if you have Verizon). Pretty easy to use, good sound, fast web, good navigation. Run's all chat functions like google, aim and blackberry chat.

Yes. I'm happy with mine so far, after a week. Again, I had the old school bb, so I'm enjoying all the features that a modern phone should have. I'm not sure what the bad reviews are on... maybe technical stuff that's way over what I look for.

how often will use the data and email?

I answer many work emails and search for businesses and locations online, as well as browsing BP and other sites... so the data plan is invaluable to me. I don't think it would have been that useful for me if I worked at a desk job, other than having a firewall/undetected means of browsing BP and elsewhere.

i'm not really sure how often i'd use it....i've never had it at my disposal before. how nice is it to have the interwebs at your disposal?

also, if i wanted to pay for it, i could browse the web on my envy. is it that much different on a bb?

Can you use opera mini on an env?

That browser is an enormous step up from the non-smartphone browsers I've used, but that was a few years ago for me. Perhaps they have that now for those.

I'd say a good portion of my internet browsing is for fun, I really don't need that.

I get a lot of value out of the instant emails, to respond to clients or send out notifications or updates. I like reading personal emails, but I don't think it's worth it at all to pay $30/mo for just personal use.

30/mo for 2 years is $720. For 300 you could get an ipod touch and use the wireless at home or work to browse the internet and get emails.

I use BlackBerry's through my company and can tell you that if you are not going to be connected to an exchange server there is no reason to have one. BlackBerry's are great for business but there are far better toys out there for surfing the net, etc.
I just got a new Bold from IT and it's the same old same old. Really no different than the Curve or Pearl. Again great for corporate America but there are phones out there that are more fun.
BlackBerry's also suck as phones IMO.

My Pearl's microphone picks up EVERYTHING (even the smallest amount of ambient noise is annoying for the other party), but because of it's short length it will sometimes miss words if I'm talking lazily, say laying on the couch, without normal amounts of emphasis.

I love the Pearl's keyboard, and can type fast and accurately even without looking. That's my biggest drawback to going to the sexy touchscreens next time around, I really don't want to stare at the keyboard every time I type.

People don't make fun of blackberry owners for owning blackberries....people make fun of blackberry owners who are douches and think that it's a status symbol.

I tend to agree with most of the above points but I'm still sorely tempted by the Storm.

I have the curve and fucking hate it. It has issues with different wav files via txt/pic messages which causes people to not hear you. You have to either 1. pull the battery out to reset the phone, or 2. hit the voice command button twice to get the phone to switch the audio file.

Verizon keeps saying their firmware updates are going to fix it and none ever do.

I haven't heard good things about the storm either. Good review and article posted here about the storm.

Tried out a Storm today and felt it was a bit cheap. The moving screen is gimmicky and lessens the value imo... the buttons didn't feel great. The interface was mediocre as well.

Basically, it felt like a very poor ripoff of the iphone, which lost sight of the quality and efficiency of a blackberry while trying to be something it is not.
