Not bad, I think. Still a couple of head scratchers, but nothing outlandish, I don't think....

Don't like UGA ahead of OSU... but, the numbers came out that way. I used 31 stat categories, and SOS is from Sagarin. Had to adjust for losses, because 4 loss Virginia Tech was top 10 and I couldn't wrap my head around that.

I made this its own thread because this time I'm not necessarily looking for new tweaks to the formula - though your comments (and even new tweaks) are more than welcome.

Utah, Georgia, Boise State, Virginia Tech, Oregon State, North Carolina:lol: Obviously, you did not use the "best of tweaks".

Well, I'm inclined to agree, but as I think about it... why?

A) Utah and Boise State are helped out by their undefeated records. But, 6 and 11 don't seem to me unreasonable (Even if I think, personally, that mid-majors should rarely, if ever, break the top 15)

B) Georgia, Virginia Tech, Oregon State and North Carolina are all helped by their SOS. At first, I was quite troubled by Georgia at 3 losses being ahead of Ohio State... but, then.. I thought.. what's the big deal? I'm not uncomfortable with a 2 loss OSU being ahead of a 0 loss Boise... so.. maybe UGAs performance v. their schedule is slightly more impressive than OSU's against OSU's schedule. As for the rest - Va Tech, Oregon State and NC - while I, like you, am not inclined to put them where they fell here - as before.. what's truly "out of line" with them where they are? I suppose we can argue if the ACC SOS bump is legit (and, as I said above, it seems unusual to me) but none-the-less, each of those teams is rated among other 3 and 4 loss teams (excluding Cincy and TCU - teams who enjoyed easy schedules). Yes, Oregon State got pole-axed by Oregon (and PSU)... but.. they did beat USC and had an otherwise decent year.

Likewise, if it were simply my opinion, there is little hope Pitt would be as high as they are here.

So, I guess what I'm saying is - I agree with your point just on my instincts... but... I'm hard pressed to disagree with the data. Again, I think the SOS data is ACC skewed, but in as much as it's a valid measure, the ratings seem generally legit.

I guess my biggest problem is with the mid-majors. I, like you and unlike BB, do not think that they should ever crack the top 15. I guess a good example would be to look at what happened to Ball State this past weekend. I know all of your rankings are statistically generated so there really is not much you can do.

I guess what I don't understand is that his defensive and offensive statistics were taken into consideration how his Oregon State and Georgia rated so high. I guess after you get past #10 you probably could just throw the rest of the teams in a hat and start drawing.

I will be very curious to see how the ACC teams do in their bowl games. I will also be curious to see the Big XII teams perform after Oklahoma and Texas.

I guess I am just too much of an eyeball analyzer:wink2:

My guess is that it's because of the offensive and defense stats I used - they don't necessarily favor high octane offenses, for example. So, while you get points for scoring TDs in 3 plays (ie high total yards passing) you also get credit for being able to plod on down the field (1st downs and 3rd down conversion) I did this for a couple reasons; A) I wanted to capture as much of the game as I could statistically and B) I didn't want to "over reward" a team which drives down the field in 30 seconds, but can't get the tough yard if they need it.

Plus, I also included turnover stats and special teams stats, which I don't know if they help or hurt Georgia and/or Oregon State, but having great special teams - being another factor in best TEAM - afforded some teams some points you might not otherwise think of.

I know one of BB73's objections on my "tweaks" thread was rewarding stats encourages running it up... I disagree with him because A) I use stats that don't get effected by scoring quickly, or throwing more to offset those stats, and B) I use so many categories, no team could say "Well, we'll maximize our rating by focusing on passing," (for example), because they'd be losing points in other categories.

why? so long as they play high caliber teams and win, why don't they deserve the rankings just a much as anyone else?

tOSU's "best" wins this season were against scum lite and northwestern. not exactly power personified... so lets not get too cocky here . boise beat a 9-3 oregon at eugene. sorry but i gotta give them atleast some credit for that. besides, who below them would you move up? UC is the only team ranked lower with less than 3 losses. we gonna have a conversation about the awesomeness of the big east? :p

georgia sos - 13
oregon state sos - 21
tOSU sos - 45

though your final statement isn't too far from the truth really. once you start hitting the 3+ loss teams your comparing who was the least mediocre. honestly, there are a lot of 2 loss teams you could throw into the mediocre category as well.

i expect the acc to do about as well as the big 10 honestly. badly. but the big 12 imo has a chance to have a very good showing all said. i really didn't see any major mismatches. they could loose every bowl game, they could also win every bowl game as well. will be fun to watch how this bowl season plays out.
