Bitching about the 2004 Season

Whoever wrote it didn't exactly do a lot of research (on top of misspelling our coaches name... IN THE TITLE!)

Left off A.J. Trapasso's underage consumption arrests/charges, and Kerr's violation of team policy are 2 that I can think of right off the bat.

These guys are just kids, they're going to get into mistakes. At least we don't have the "thugs" that Miami has, and the 2 worst violations were punished by kicking the players off the team (Cooper and Irrizary).

Kerr's problems were not of "legal" nature.
But you are correct on A.J. they missed that one.

I think the "big deal" is that a very minor reason why Cooper was fired was team discipline. Tressel was expected to get us back on the straight and narrow. However, I think they're putting a magnifying glass on a dent. The problems Tressel has faced aren't different from other programs, we're just fortunate enough to have a gaggle of media there to demonize our players.

Except when John Cooper was coach. then it was all his fault. :roll1:
I think people tried to come up with a lot of other reasons to get rid of Cooper, but the bottom line was that he was fired for his inability to beat scUM...with a superior team on more than one occasion. If Tressel drops 3 or 4 in a row to them, the heat will be turned up on him as well.

An AD better have more than one reason if he is going to fire a coach that has been with a program for over a decade. This is taken from http://www.jimfeist.com/Points/CFB42.htm -- a compilation of press releases in January of 2001.

Ohio State's John Cooper was shown the door after the Buckeye's embarrassing showing against South Carolina. As a 5-point favorite, Ohio State lost 24-7. Cooper was 3-7 in Bowl games and his teams didn't seem to get up or be prepared for post-season, or many big games, for that matter. In addition to the South Carolina debacle, Cooper's team was a 4-point favorite in the 1995 Fiesta Bowl and lost to Tennessee, and a 16-point favorite in the 1990 Liberty Bowl and lost outright to Air Force 23-11. He had well-documented trouble beating Michigan, but two embarrassing and shocking defeats stand out. A late-season 28-24 home loss to Michigan State in 1998 where Ohio State was unbeaten, #1 in the nation and a 28-point favorite. And in 1996, the Buckeyes were unbeaten and as a 17-point home favorite, lost to Michigan 13-9, blowing a 9-0 lead. Ouch. Double-Ouch.

Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger said the decision to fire Cooper did not hinge on whether Ohio State won the Outback Bowl but rather out of concern over discipline, competitiveness and player academics. He added: "I was dismayed by things that happened in and around the Outback Bowl - the game itself and some of the incidents, or non-incidents, that happened during the week."

I think Tressel is an excellent coach and the discipline problems are being exaggerated. Hopefully he proves me correct and sticks with our program for a long time.

If you think about it, from last spring through the present, all we've had is the Irizarry/Guilford incident and the Ross incident (ok, count Trapasso and Kerr if you want). That's not bad at all. I'd bet there are a bunch of other schools that wish they could claim that level of serenity and sanity.

The 2-10-1 record played a huge role in the firing. The bowl record wasnt much better. What is getting glossed over is the behavior of the team in Coopers last bowl trip. There were articles in the Fla papers about OSU players being out until 2am the day before (actually day of) the game. You had players suing each other. The thug like play of the buckeyes in the loss only poured salt in the wound of the buckeye nation.

I was digusted by the loss, totally NOT suprised by it... most importantly, it is the only time I have ever been embarassed to be a buckeye fan. The team played like the Maimi hurricanes of the 1980's..... classless, cheap shot thugs.

Critical penalties KILL

It seems like almost every game critical penalties just massacre us. Our offensive stats would look a lot better today but for two holding penalties. It's bad enough to cause penalties you are constantly schooled not to make, but I am more worried that they will discourage these young guys whose superb effort goes for naught. At least one today was made by one of our experienced lineman. Drives me nuts!
Go Bucks!

No joke. The lack a discipline has got to be driving Tressel crazy, and despite their friendship, I can definitely see our OL coach heading to another position quietly.

Today we played very well on offense but the penalties did kill us. I agree with you 100 %...... and against Penn State and performing like that says something about our young line/offense. We're improving thats for sure.
