Bitching about the 2004 Season

We basically announce by each formation that we plan on running or passing. Admit it... you see a certain formation and you know what is going to happen. If we can see it, imagine what the coached defense is thinking?

Piney- I don't disagree with you at all... my point is that with us... on first down... you needn't even look at the formation.. at least in the whole first half.

I was screaming at the TV every time we went with an empty backfield.. It worked OK with CK because he was the RB back there... until Zwick shows that he's a threat to run, you can pretty much just pin you ears back if you're the DL... otherwise go four wide with a RB...

I may have posted something similar to that on a different thread, so I apologize if I'm sounding repititious.

Good First Post Piney-- I'll hook you up.

AKAKBUCK , To answer your question on how many times we ran the ball -
36 times for 92 yards (you were close). I agree that we do have a degree of predictability. I mean when I can predict what and where they are going to run the ball on 1st downs ... Thats troubling.
>Throws on 1st down = 12 passes for a net of 35 yards

As you stated also about execution on the OL as well as everywhere else on Offense. OSU had 30 offensive plays resulting in no gain or a loss of yards. Major execution problems. Hopefully that will get ironed out. Coach Tressel emphasized that was a huge problem but we all know that too.
As for mixing it up. We tried all these plays and here are the results:
> QB scramble - 12 for 22 yrds.
> Base/Iso - 12 for 37 yrds.
> Draw - 2 for 6 yrds.
> Counter/trap - 4 for 16 yrds.
> Sweep - 4 for 2 yrds.
> Power - 2 for 9 yrds.
Not too impressive huh?? They are trying a few things though ?? In the future Screens may bust these defenses from stacking the line with at least 7 guys but OSU just isn't that kind of team, a guy can dream though right. I think that would be a great play if they could learn it. A fast screen can make any defense honest. I said it once and I'll keep saying it, but it has alot to do with maturity, especially at key positions and until that maturity comes around, we are in for a bumpy road. We will be alot better soon with the maturity and execution must improved though. Keep the faith !!

:osu2: Its always great to be a BUCKEYE :osu2:

More importantly, hopefully we'll see improved efficacy when our QB is more focused on the game than he is retaining his starting position. If Troy Smith's attitude is half of what it sounds from some who were in the stadium early, I suspect JZ can start to relax a bit.
Clarity, Can you expand on what you're talking about? I got to the stadium minutes before kickoff, but I did notice Troy was sort of standing around showing little emotion during the game. Usually, he shows a lot of enthusiasm and talks a lot with the other players but not this week.

I was thinking last year if we had a more lighter type of athletic lineman that would solve some of the problems also. But like Mili said it has gone Hiroshima right in our faces. Also I feel that the intracacies of zone blocking and the techiques we are using may be hard for some of these younger lineman to grasp. Regardless of how smart they seem to be, it is still going to take some to make the necessary adjustments. I'm all for seeing a much improved line play, but then again we have to be patient which I now find that alot of Buckeye fans have difficulty accepting that.

I am sick of "zone blocking". Since we have started this new "zone blocking" scheme under Bollman our running game has sucked ass. I don't even know what it means but it definitely isn't working.

It isn't all bad on line. The pass blocking already looks a lot better than the last few years to me.

If youth is the problem, then depth is the answer... and hey, that's being worked on right now. Get enough solid players in place so that the young pups can learn the system. When they eventually do take the field, as say... RS Soph's or juniors, it should be instinctive. Unfortunately, the cupboard is a bit bare just now, when it comes to experienced linemen. Look at the recruiting board, however, and have a nice smile :)

I think he wants us to go work him over. Is 3yards' vcash all tapped out? Maybe it vGuido and vCrowbar time.

Or maybe we just need a scapegoat. But then, I've always associated "goat" with "Tibor," at least around here.

I mean POWER FOOTBALL between the tackles. Woody Style. Get the BASICS of the run down and your passing game will become one of opportunity and not necessity.
Its nice to think we could actually become a power running team, but its not going to happen over night, the o line is performing at a very low level right now and its really hurting us on offense.

god I wish we had pace.....

Clarity, what are you referring to about Troy's attitude at the stadium?
