Bird Droppings (Orioles 2010 Tidbits)

  • Decided I'd start a thread for the O's.

I think the O's will hit decently this year, but their pitching is the biggest question mark and their fielding will leave a lot to be desired.

I just hope they don't lose 100 games this year.

I've got Adam Jones on my fantasy team, had Luke Scott last year.

I've always kind of liked the O's growing up in Rochester NY and all. A good friend of mine in HS was a huge Eddie Murray fan.

Much like the Reds, a once proud franchise on the seat of its ass way to long and heading back up.

    I blame this guy:

He and his idiot sons completely devastated what once was a relatively potent minor league system for a two year run at a title. Then, when it was time to rebuild, he went the other way and started bringing in older and less efficient players (Sammy Sosa, Miguel Tejada) who both broke down.

This is about as far as I'll go. I'm not buying a jersey or even going to a game at Camden Yards or anywhere else for that matter until this idiot dies and his sons sell the team to Cal.

Orioles ready to talk if Ripken wants job

Cal Ripken Jr. has not offered himself to the Baltimore Orioles as a prospective employee, team owner Peter Angelos said Saturday, adding that if Ripken wants to be part of the organization, he'd be happy to sit down and talk with the Hall of Famer about a job.

Angelos was responding to a FoxSports.com story that he turned down the opportunity to hire Ripken, who spent all 21 of his major league seasons with the Orioles.

"Quite simply, Cal Ripken did not offer to become part of the Oriole organization in any secondary position, such as manager or as an assistant to [team president] Andy MacPhail, or in some kind of support role of MacPhail," Angelos said. "If he wants to make such a proposal, I'd like to hear about it."
Ripken and the Orioles are collaborating on a youth baseball academy in Sarasota, Fla., and in the midst of a discussion about that subject, there was talk about having Ripken serve in some capacity in spring training.

That did not lead to a job for Ripken with the Orioles, but Angelos indicated repeatedly Saturday morning that he'd like to talk to Ripken about whatever ideas he has.

"I see Cal often, and I consider him a friend," Angelos said. "From a standpoint of rejecting Cal Ripken, that's an impossibility. If this [story] is coming from him, I'd like to sit down and talk to him."

Within the FoxSports.com story, a source is cited as indicating that Angelos told Ripken, in a private conversation, that he did not want to hire him because Ripken would get credit if the Orioles' fortunes on the field turned.

"That's absurd," Angelos said. "Even if someone harbored such thoughts, I think common sense would tell you that they wouldn't be crass enough to express that."

Ripken played in an MLB-record 2,632 straight games for the Orioles as a shortstop and third baseman. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007.

so not only do the O's suck for seemingly the 1010000th year in a row, but the one guy associated in any way with the franchise that could generate any interest in it is apparently either been told "Thanks but no thanks" or isn't interested.

I smell a rat, and it's not just because the team is 1-11 and really really really looking like the 1988 O's to me.

In the outfield, angry fans are ready to send Nolan Reimold (.179/.282/.299) and Adam Jones (.225/.250/.367) to the minors. I understand the impulse but I'm not ready to turn on a Sunday game and see a starting outfield of Jeff Salazar, Corey Patterson, and Nick Markakis. Nick would continually call time outs to pound his head against the right field wall in frustration. Not to say that some parts of that scenario couldn't come true. I'm just not ready to think about it. Jones and Moldy will turn it around, right?
I'm so sure Jax was worried about where Corey Patterson was playing these days :smash:

And yes, this might be the worst teamin MLB history. They are on pace for a 45-117 season :slappy:

Orioles' Reimold heading to minors - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN

    Orioles' Reimold heading to minors
    By Rob Neyer

Looks like the Orioles are demoting Nolan Reimold, with Corey Patterson taking his roster spot. The Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly:

Reimold has batted just .205 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 29 games with the Orioles this season, but his struggles extended beyond the plate. On Tuesday, he misplayed two singles in left field, getting a late break on one and bobbling another.

After the game, Orioles manager Dave Trembley said he thought Reimold was struggling with his confidence.

Reimold was a candidate for the 2009 American League Rookie of the Year before injuring his left Achilles and not playing after mid-September. He hit .279 with 15 homers in 2009. The Achilles hampered him this spring after offseason surgery.
I'm not sure what hurts more: an Achilles injury, or losing your roster spot to Corey Patterson.

Was that wrong? Should I not have written that?

    Cont'd ...
