Big XII (official thread of whining, and homely herpes-having’ hos)

The Big 12’s commissioner is stepping down

90

The Big 12 Conference announced Tuesday afternoon that commissioner Bob Bowlsby will be stepping away from his post.

An exact timeline was not given, but the conference said it will happen “later this year.” Bowlsby will remain in the position until the appointment of a new commissioner is made, the conference said, and then will transition to a “new interim role with the conference.”

Bowlsby, who turned 70 in January, has been the Big 12 commissioner since 2012, and last fall was a central figure in the conference adding BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF after Texas and Oklahoma announced they were going to leave the Big 12 for the SEC.

“After more than 40 years of serving in leadership roles in intercollegiate athletics, including the last 10 with the Big 12, and given the major issues that college sports in general and the Big 12 specifically will address in the next several years, I have reached a natural transition point in my tenure as commissioner, as well as in my career,” Bowlsby said in a statement.

Cincinnati, Houston and UCF will officially join BYU in moving to the Big 12 in 2023

There’s finally some conference realignment clarity, particularly regarding the Big 12 Conference.

Cincinnati, Houston and UCF will officially join the Big 12 next season, the American Athletic Conference announced Friday.

The three schools came to an agreement with the AAC to depart the league next season and join the Big 12 beginning July 1, 2023.

That is the same time that BYU will also join the Big 12 Conference.

When will Texas and Oklahoma leave the Big 12 for the SEC?

That wasn’t the only news from Friday morning, though, in conference realignment moves corresponding to Big 12 expansion.

The Austin American-Statesman’s Brian Davis reported a “more realistic target date” for Texas and Oklahoma to join the SEC is 2024.

That would mean the Longhorns and Sooners would be in the Big 12 for one season with BYU, Houston, Cincinnati and UCF before leaving for the SEC.

When will the Conference USA lose six teams to the AAC?

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini also reported that the six Conference USA schools who are exiting the league to join the AAC are also expected to formally join their new conference July 1, 2023.

“They had been waiting for the AAC departures,” Vannini wrote.

That group of schools includes Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA.

I wonder how many pairs of kneepads the juggalos are going to burn through begging Bowlsby to give them Tejas or OU in Cincinnati that year? They'll ask for it on a weekend when we're playing Purdue or Rutgers, and trumpet it as "Ohio's BIGGEST college football game of the year!"

All in all, it wouldn't be a bad play by the B12 to establish some market presence in Ohio. I'm sure though that the existing conference schools are going to make a strong push to hog all the home games with OUT before they're out.

From a cash flow perspective and maybe even a TVM perspective, the AAC made that a very easy decision to leave early.

Hmmmmm, don’t know about Houston or UCF, but Bearcat football still takes money from the academic side of the house. They took in 32M in 2019 and another 30M in 2020. Couldn’t find a figure for 21.

Sources: Big 12 Aiming to Hire Roc Nation Executive Brett Yormark as Next Commissioner

brett-yormark.webp

The Big 12 is targeting a talent agency executive to be its next conference commissioner.

Brett Yormark, the COO of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, is finalizing a deal to be the new leader of the Power 5 league, sources tell Sports Illustrated, a stunning move that brings yet another outsider into college sports’ most exclusive and powerful group.

Yormark, 55, has spent the last three years at Roc Nation, originally as co-CEO with twin brother Michael. In his various roles at Roc Nation, he’s worked with artists, athletes, leagues, teams and brands and oversees sponsorship, licensing, content partnerships and brand strategy. These are essential elements and qualities especially beneficial in an ever-changing college sports landscape that entered a new phase last July with the lifting of the NCAA’s amateurism rules. The era of name, image and likeness (NIL) has brought legalized athlete pay, agent involvement and player branding never before seen in college sports.

In the Big 12, Yormark has big shoes to fill. He replaces a legendary figure in college athletics in Bob Bowlsby, and he must navigate a rapidly changing world in a conference dealing with incredible change itself. Its two richest members, Texas and Oklahoma, are bound for the SEC in 2025. Their exit timing and fee are essential issues on the new commissioner’s to-do list, as well as renegotiating the league’s media rights deal, which ends after the 2024-25 season. The Big 12 will be following the SEC, Big Ten and Pac-12 in renegotiating its TV contract—a prickly position to navigate as its media rights revenue is expected to decrease. Meanwhile, four new members in UCF, Houston, Cincinnati and BYU are entering the league, enhancing what many already believe to be the country’s best men’s college basketball league.

For many, the move is shocking. But it does follow a similar decision last year when the Pac-12 hired George Kliavkoff, an MGM Resorts sports and entertainment executive. Kliavkoff was hired a year after the Big Ten went outside the industry with its pick to replace Jim Delaney: Kevin Warren, a former Minnesota Vikings executive.

Just sayin': The Big XII really screwed up by prematurely adding BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston. Now they probably could have had their choice of the PAC-12 leftovers: i.e. Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Stanford, Colorado, and/or Utah etc. Combining their 8 remaining teams (after Texas and Oklahoma leave) with 8 (or so) of the PAC-12 leftovers might have actually given them a good argument that they are a "super conference" too.

The options appear to be either:

1. A merger between the big 12 and pac 12 leftovers.

2. One conference poaches the other hard and only one survives.

3. Pac poaches the Mwc, then both major conferences are shambles. Will result in the sec and big ten poaches a few more.

I personally hope for no 1. If we get no 2 then I’d guess the pac will survive since their leftovers have more appeal. That would be ok.

If we get no 3, then we end up with 2 20-22 team conferences in an east/west format, which is basically 4 conferences. Acc will also fall to obscurity after 2-3 teams are poached. Worst outcome IMO.
