Big Ten Network deal called 'fairly unlikely'

By Kyle Nagel

It is "fairly unlikely" that Time Warner Cable will reach an agreement to carry the Big Ten Network before this weekend's college football games, a BTN spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The network, which debuts at 8 tonight, has faced contentious negotiations with the country's major cable companies about carrying the channel dedicated to the Big Ten Conference.

The bottom line on BTN? It's not worth it

By By Kyle Nagel
Staff Writer

When I first talked to Mark Silverman on May 30, the Big Ten Network president was friendly and optimistic. A month later when we talked, he was referring to national cable providers and their negotiating stances as "crazy" and "absurd."
As the summer progressed and the pressure increased for the BTN (which launches tonight) to make a deal with national providers, those negotiations became heated in a hurry. While Ohio State and Big Ten fans started to sweat their ability to see games on television ? including the Buckeyes' first two ? things turned ugly:

Smaller providers quickly adopt Big Ten Network

By Kyle Nagel
Staff Writer

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Six months ago, New Knoxville Television and Cable surveyed its 3,000 customers and asked which new channels they would like to receive. The winner, by far, was the Big Ten Network.
"We decided to climb on board right away," said General Manager Preston Meyer.

The Big Ten Network is ready for football season, though few fans will get to see its first big day.

The conference?s new TV network has been unable to sign a deal with the two largest cable television providers in the Midwest ? Comcast and Time Warner. Time Warner services a large portion of Stark County.

Buckeyes blacked out
Network-cable fight keeps Ohio State off TV
BY DUSTIN DOW / [email protected]

The Big Ten Network debuts nationwide today with a robust schedule for 39 football games, 140 men's basketball games and round-the-clock coverage of the most popular college sports conference in the country. Guess who won't be watching: most of the 18 million cable subscribers living in the eight Big Ten states, including 650,000 Time Warner Cable subscribers in Southwest Ohio.

Opinion: Network still has issues
By Eric Thomas, August 11, 2007

I am now officially worn out from Big Ten Network talk.

I'm tired of the now endless commercials running on local television channels begging fans of Big Ten schools to contact a certain local cable provider to pick up the channel.

Money at the center of TV tussle
Fans in middle as Big Ten Network, cable providers haggle

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

It appears a lot of Ohio State fanatics won't get their fix Saturday, and after waiting eight months to purge the Bowl Championship Series title game from memory, they're looking to blame someone.

In one corner stands the Big Ten Network, which launches at 8 tonight and will broadcast six football games Saturday, including Ohio State's opener against Youngstown State.
In the other corner are all but one of the Midwest's major cable providers, which have not agreed to air the network. Insight, one of central Ohio's three providers, agreed to a deal yesterday. The other two, Time Warner and WOW, continue to reject the network's demands to be included in "expanded basic" service for a reported payment of $1.10 per subscriber per month in the Big Ten's eight-state region. They say at that price, the network belongs on a more costly "sports tier."

I, for one, say kudos to the cable companies. While I don't think they're particularly wonderful, they have stood their ground to this network despite heavy fan pressure. Having 4-5 games of football and 15-20 basketball games (which were all free before) isn't worth the increased cost for subscribers. I love OSU as much as anyone, but the BTN is greedy.

Ohio State on TV
Insight strikes deal with Big Ten

Thursday, August 30, 2007 3:35 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

One domino down, two to go.

Insight scored the first touchdown of the Ohio State football season yesterday when it became the first of central Ohio's three cable-television providers to agree to carry the new Big Ten Network.
The agreement ensures that Insight customers will be able to watch the Buckeyes' opener against Youngstown State on Saturday in the comfort of their homes.
Insight is the second largest of central Ohio's three cable providers. The others, market leader Time Warner and WOW, have not agreed to terms with the Big Ten Network.
"Our position has not changed" in light of Insight's deal, Time Warner spokeswoman Judy Barbao said. "We still believe (the network is) best suited to a sports tier in the current cost structure.

I don't mean to be a rumor monger but...

On TWC here in Cincy, ESPN Classic has been moved from Channel 32 to Channel 109 in the Digital Tier. Could that move be making a spot for the BTN? I seriously doubt it, but I hope so.

As far is ESPN Classic (or The Boxing & Poker Channel, as I refer to it) goes, it's a well-deserved demotion. They hardly show any classic sports anymore, but they had started showing a few lower-tier college football games as live broadcasts, so that's yet more college football that's being taken off of basic service.

No my parents live in cincy and it was announced a few weeks ago. As of sept 1st TW in cincy is adding ESPN U though. I think it is going up into the 100 area to, near where they put ESPN classic. I was looking at the new llineup when I was home last weekend.
