So here is a representative of Fox, and an employee of News Corp - the parent company of Direct TV - saying that folks should look into moving off Comcast if they want the BTN. And what are their alternatives?

I don't know about you, but my "alternative" is to just go to a bar with Direct TV and watch the game there and get trashed. Thankfully that bar is within walking distance. Or should I say stumbling distance?

Or, I could go to my buddies who has Direct TV and watch it there.

Sure I lose the convenience of watching it at home. But now I get to be away from the wife for a few more hours than normal

Yeah, I like the part of getting out to a bar and watching the game and getting trashed. Plus watching the game with a bunch of other Buckeye fans sounds good to me!

I lived in ohio for 18 years and now have had to move to florida. I have heard that some people stream the ohio state games live online. Anyone know any info on that?

There is significant discussion of streaming in this thread. There are also other places on this site where streaming has been discussed.

The "Search Thread" and "Search Forum" tools will save you a lot of time and a lot of reading.

For those of you on Cleveland's east side, FYI: I just called the BW3 in Mayfield. It is so far "undetermined" whether they'll show the game. My guess is that the guy who answered the phone wasn't able to find out from his manager(s) in a short amount of time, so he gave up and told me to call back later in the week.

I'll call back Wednesday or Thursday and I'll post my results here.

Edit: In case my plan falls apart, does anyone know of another place on the east side of Cleveland to watch the game?

Update 8-31-07: I called back, and the guy answered like, "Of course we'll have the game." So I'll be there. I'll be the guy rooting for Ohio State.

Most of the BW3s I know of have Direct TV. So they SHOULD have the Big Ten Network. Or at least that is what I am banking on as the Avon Lake BW3s is a 10 minute jog from my house.

Just checked Direct TV and the BTN will be channel 220 and won't launch until August 30th. So if I were you I would call Friday afternoon and ask them if they get channel 220. If they do, they should have the game.

Is it channel 220 for every Direct TV? I'll call again and ask on Friday about that.

You could try the Fox and the Hound on SOM Center Road. It's pretty close to the BW3 you referenced.

Good call. That'll be Plan B, since it's farther from my house, and I happen to like that BW3 better.

That's the non-HD channel for now...we need to keep an eye open for which channel(s) they'll use when they get the BTN HD feeds up.
Interesting point, for I had read on DBSTalk that the same channel numbers would be used HD or no, just like you get local (OTA) and SAT (from the sky) HD local channels.

But, frankly, I don't know if that will be the way they do it.

You may be right...I'm just going by what they've been doing so far (all HD channels are below 100 and their non-HD equivalent channels above 100).

Mili - good case in point would be the HBO-HD channels.

The one most will latch onto is 70.
But the same channel is also available, in HD - when viewing on an HD receiver in the 500s. So, I conclude that D* can put any HD feed wherever they really want.

Consider also the large throughput of HD channels D* wants to pump out beginning September this year. The total tally of new channels takes their HD count upward of 120. No way they can do that and serve non-HD (still the majority) on uniquely numbered channels.

Somehow, the HD-receiver takes and splits the signals so HD-receivers see the presence of the HD channels, while regular receivers get their 480i feed.

MPEG-2, MPEG-4 is the feed terminology they throw around on DBSTalk most often when discussing this ability.

I was starting to get pissed off about the whole BTN thing, and jealous of the people who can get DirecTV because they don't live in an apartment like I do.

...Then my girlfriend's parents gave us their alumni tickets for the YSU game. So while you guys go through all this BTN hassle, I'm going to the game FOR FREE!
