Big Ten Men's Hockey Conference coming in 2013-14

could be. you have to bring in bc for all other aspects also. then you have a spread of nebraska to mass. thats a really dramatic spread. but then again you can always kick the tires and look around, right?

That is the one problem I had with it too. But I found that it is only about 60 more miles from Boston to Lincoln, than it is to Miami. So it could be possible. Not to mention that they fit the criteria the Big Ten was looking for.

And as to the point about the amount of powerhouses, I do realize that does no benefit to OSU. But from a Big Ten perspective, the addition of BC would be an invaluable asset that could help maximize interest in a Big Ten hockey conference.

i meant for the conference. lincoln is a ways off, but they bring a steep football history. im not sure bc brings that same level in anyone sport...

personally, i think that within five years you have the super power hockey conference, it would be awful difficult to recruit against someone who could offer a kid a good education, tv exposure and a shoot at the nhl. this is much like the acc and big ten had in the early 90s with big monday and super tuesday and the early rise of espn. in all reality that drove a spike in a sport where 2-3 players can put you in the final four...

Big Ten Uber Alles!

The Big Ten commissioner didn't see the 18-game conference basketball schedule being extended. But he did say that on the table is a possible Big Ten hockey championship, once another school adds hockey as a sport. Five conference schools now play the sport: Minnesota and Wisconsin in the WCHA, and Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

Never thought I'd see it (Big Ten Hockey Conference). Still have doubts, but everything's about the Big Ten Network and money.

Guess the announcement's tomorrow.

In a move that will significantly alter the college hockey landscape, the formal announcement of Penn State?s plans to launch of a men?s hockey program is imminent, sources tell Inside College Hockey.

Multiple sources in college and junior hockey, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the plan; one source told INCH that the university will make a formal announcement this Friday. A Penn State spokesperson late last week declined to comment on the matter.

It's official - State Penn will jump to D-1

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Major college hockey is coming to Penn State.

Ending years of rumors and speculation, university leaders at a trustees meeting formally announced Friday the establishment of Division I men's and women's ice hockey programs to begin play in the 2012-13 season.

Happy Valley hockey fans can thank Terry and Kim Pegula after the couple donated $88 million -- the largest private gift in Penn State history -- to finance a new multipurpose arena to be built near the Jordan Center and help establish the men's program.

Five other Big Ten schools play Division I hockey, but there is no Big Ten hockey league.

Minnesota and Wisconsin play in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, and Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State are in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Big Ten, which is scheduled to expand its membership to 12 when Nebraska joins in the 2011-12 school year, now could decide to begin its own hockey league.

That could create a domino effect for college hockey throughout the Midwest.

Both the CCHA and WCHA have expressed interest in adding Penn State.

Penn State's press release isn't too subtle about where this is all headed.

The Pegulas' commitment also creates an endowment to support an NCAA Division I men's ice hockey program. "We're very proud of the success that our ACHA club hockey program has achieved, and this gift will allow us to take the sport to a completely new level at Penn State," said Tim Curley, director of Penn State's Intercollegiate Athletics. "Thanks to the Pegulas, we will be able to enter NCAA competition in 2012-13. Penn State's launch of Division I hockey will lead to additional competition within the Big Ten, and that has the potential to transform college hockey in this country. Penn State also plans to launch a Division I women's ice hockey program." (See separate news release http://live.psu.edu/story/48448).

Re: You see, the implications go far beyond State College. By adding varsity hockey, Penn State will become the 6th team from the Big Ten to offer the sport along with Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the aforementioned Buckeyes which will allow the conference to sponsor hockey and have its champion receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. This will almost certainly occur sometime in the future

A Big 10 hockey league in the next couple years wouldn't surprise me. More live programming for the Big 10 Network equals more viewers. More viewrers equals more (advertising revenue) money, etc.

Hope Big Ten Hockey happens quick, and start adding more big stadium games, scum vs MSU has already sold 100,000 tickets for their upcoming match. That's a nice money maker in Dec/Feb. The (Hockey) Game in a sold out Shoe would be exciting as hell IMO.

If the BigTen becomes a true hockey league, then the CCHA will lose 3 of its stronger members. Notre DAme is a member of the CCHA. NOtre Dame will probably feel left out.

....could this be a forerunner to one of these two options?:

1. show Notre Dame in hockey what it's going to be like to miss the BigTen train at the station one last time

2. take another step towards aligning all sports into a BigTen conference and ultimately welcoming Notre Dame in

I must say, this would be cool, but I would miss the CCHA. I started going to games as a little kid (like 2-3 years old) back in the late 70's with my mom and dad who would invite players over for dinner etc (Mike Blake, Steve Jones, Rod McNair, Larry Marson).

I've loved the "underground" sort of atmosphere of being in the CCHA and having all these "strange" seeming teams in the conference like Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Western Michigan.

I would feel a sense of loss if this happened, but it would be an interesting new direction. Also, the rivalries with Miami and BGSU, which have cooled admittedly, over the years would be sad casualties.

Also, to the poster who referred to hockey as "ice boxing" in the 90's, there hasn't been fighting in college hockey for alot longer than that, so I'm not sure what you were watching.

Anyone see a guy do this before?

Mike Legg, a former Michigan hockey player, cradles the puck while behind the goal. When he slips it into the top of the net, the Minnesota goalie has no idea how to react.
