Big Ten Conference Divisions

Anyone else see the new commercials running on the BTN promoting Legends and Leaders?
Have to believe that the television production arm of BTN must have had some strong input in the BTC discussion amid the public outcry against the naming of the B10 conference divisions.
If the Big Ten Conference had not decided to wait a year to "evaluate" the division names, they would lose the $izable inve$tment$ for producing their "leaders and legends" commercials as well as valuable time needed to retool for a new package.

East, West, North, South, Great Lakes, Great Plains, Leaders, or Legends, I don't really care. Can't believe the things people get in an uproar about.

Same here. I saw the ads for the division names/etc. during the PSU babsketball game on Saturday and must admit, I'm fine with Leaders and Legends.

Leaders and Legends would be great for a conference slogan or marketing tagline. As a case in point: for its ability to be used in commercials like you saw during the basketball gameworks, Leaders and Legends works quite well.

However, it fails miserably as functional names for divisions.

Bing-fucking-o. Division names should have at least some sort of reason, if not function. You can almost never go wrong with geographical names, whether they be location-based (North/South, East/West) or descriptive (Lakes/Plains). Using those names, you can readily justify the placement of nearly all, if not all, of the teams. In the case of Leaders/Legends, how do you justify which school is or is not a leader/legend? You can't.

I don't really like the new names, but division names that mean absolutely nothing, relative to location, tells me a couple of things. The Big Ten isn't even close to done with expansion, and they didn't want to be restricted in which division they could put new members.

Lakes and Plains would have left out many of the possible targets that we've discussed in the expansion thread. Directional names would have opened the possibility to add just about anyone to the conference, but could lead to multiple divisional realignment, and I don't think that the Big Ten wants to go through the hell of realignment after the chaos and uproar that the divisional split caused.

The one positive that I can see with these names is that, with names like leaders and legends, you can bet your ass that we won't be adding Rutgers, UC, or Louisville to the conference...not that we would have done that anyway. :tongue2:

Just realized and/or noticed that the conference completely scrapped a few of the new logos, such as the ones where "Big" and "Ten" were spelled out.

Not really a few, but most of the logos seemed to have been scrapped.

That's a good thing. The initial B1G TEN logo looked amateurish, but somehow the B1G logo contained therein was pretty sharp. I'm glad they're sticking with that part.

Good eye. I assume you recall that page having the other hideous boxed logo as well? The wayback website isn't functional for that url.

The standalone B1G was always fine (minor complaints about the blue color) design wise. It was the painfully awkward box and spacing that had people up in arms.

No need to work a "12" into the logo because the boys aren't done yet. I half jokingly said they should just rename it the BIG Conference to piss people off, so the new logo fits.
