A couple of past proposed 'super conferences' that never got off the ground

Circa 1959:

(The PAC 8 powers)
Washington
Cal
USC
UCLA
Stanford
+
Notre Dame
Penn
Penn State
Duke
Georgia Tech
Army
Navy
Air Force

McGrath: Airplane Conference never got off the ground

[/i]

Circa 1990:

(Old Metro Conf)
Cincinnati
Florida State
Louisville
Memphis State
South Carolina
Southern Miss
Tulane
Virginia Tech
+
Boston College
Pitt
Rutgers
Syracuse
Temple
West Virginia
East Carolina
Miami

History lesson: Super-conference concept rooted in 1990 proposal

[/i]

Interesting finds. Who knew that CUSA was almost started in 1959? Army, Navy, Air Force, Duke, and Penn? I don't think that conference would have survived long. USC would have had a field day in that conference more than they already did in the PAC-10.

The 1990 one is intriguing.

Interesting developments.

If Mizzou gets stuck, the Big XII is back to 10 with TCU (it makes sense for them to accept, and I don't think the offer was made without knowing the answer ahead of time).

They could get back to 12 by adding 2 teams from (BYU-Air Force-Houston, or Big East leftovers WVU-Louisville-Cincy), getting them the CCG money again.

The Big East is down to 6 football teams right now, with only West Virginia having a long history of BCS level football. Rutgers has been a weak sister for decades, Louisville and Cincy only got out of Conf-USA when Miami/VT/BC left the Big East a few years ago, and USF and UConn only joined Division 1A/FCS about 10 years ago.

Adding Navy and a couple other teams doesn't exactly scream 'AQ Conference"!

BYU and Houston would work but who wants another Texa$ team? Cincy, UofL and WVU would not fit well IMO.

The Big East is basically dwidling to nothingness. I have to think that domers are doing some serious thinking about where their future lies at this point...

If ND makes any overtures to the B1G, I think them + Mizzou makes sense... Otherwise, does ND go for the ACC just to spite the B1G? Or even try to get their 'non-revenue' sports into the ACC and remain indy in football? Two very real possibilities, imo...

I'd be pleased if Tejas is stuck with a conference, not of peers, but of leftovers.

Thats the way Tejas wants it... they want it like ND... play noone and still get to the BCS

True, true, and true!

The BE never really was a conference. It was two schools that dominated football. B-ball is another story though.

ND will do almost anything to, in their minds, spit in the face of the B1G. In our minds, we just laugh and go about our day. Fuck ND!

I love your last statement. The leftovers is all they are getting but Texa$ fans don't care. Have you been to that state lately? You would think they were secluded from the CONUS like Hawaii or Alaska. Who knew there was football outside the country...err...the state of Texa$? They don't! Fuck Texa$!
