I think even the most staunch supporter of ND's independence would quickly admit that if they ever had to join a conference, the Big Ten is the only one they'd seriously consider.

Exactly. The ACC is a rather transparent negotiating tactic. The Longhorn Conference (Bush League)? That's sounds like a PR move to try to make it look like a conference that almost completely unraveled in two weeks time is actually healthy enough to grow aggressively.

Well.. they (the Longhorn Conf) do have a huge TV deal... well... not really a "deal".... but.. promises have been made... sorta... but... not really... but certainly optimistic projections exist.... and that's something....

No?

I've seen a couple ND fans argue on message boards that the ACC would be preferable. It's certainly possible they were just being argumentative, but their point was that because the ACC has several smallish private schools whereas the BigTen is almost exclusively enormous state schools, ND's university-wide interests would be better represented, and they're a better "cultural" fit, in the ACC. Now, I'd be very surprised if the ACC were considered a serious option by ND brass, but a few fans professed to feel this way.

Bebee is a rube. I'm going to laugh heartily when we all find out that he was actually just a phishing victim and those millions of dollars are never going to show up in Texas'... err... the Big XII's account.

FYI for yall, the sports talk guys this morning were going on about Arkansas putting out feelers and how ND to the "Texas and the 9 Dwarfs" makes so much since... .. I want to call up and say can you guys even read or have you even heard what your saying?

1) Arkansas aint comin back. Jerry just wants Jerry World to host a championship game
2) Even if the ND AD wanted to go ( heard he was a finalist for the big XII commish job before Beebe got it, and he's best buds with Dodds). The academic side of the house would never let it happen given the academic rep they have...

so frustrating

The way I read it, this would be be similar to ND's current setup with the Big East. That is, ND would be in Big 12 in all sports but football and they would play at least 3 games each year with the other Big 12 teams in football. Still not happening IMO, long travel times in non-revenue sports would not make it worthwhile (for Big 12 or for ND) but more plausible than ND giving up its independence. After all, what is ND without its clever marketing ploys? (Touchdown "Jesus", Fighting "Irish", football "independence") Just another catholic college in freaking South Bend, Indiana.

Yeah... I can see that. A huge RCC assembly having cultural similarities to the Southern Baptist Bible Belt. :shake:

*I'm obviously oversimplifying the entire league into the SE.

I don't think you're far off base though. Simply having private schools does not make it a cultural fit. Half of the Big East are Catholic institutions, that is the fundamental difference. DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Notre Dame, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's, and Villanova have little in common with ACC institutions. Boston College doesn't fit in there, and best culturally fits with the Catholic 8 in the Big East.

Never put it past the domers to manipulate others to their ends. They probably see the B12 as a safer haven for their non-revenue sports than the BE. In other words, they take nuking the BE to force ND's hand off the table for Delany.

Personally, I just don't see Texas letting them in, even if football were included. UT has set up this nice little plantation for themselves, and they don't need a second overseer.

I don't think they were talking in the sense of regional culture, but in the sense of school focus and the atmosphere of campus life. Smallish private schools with a primary focus on undergraduate education, vs. mega state schools with a substantial focus on graduate research and the hustle-and-bustle that comes with having several tens of thousands of people on campus. And while I've never been to Notre Dame, I'd imagine daily campus life is much more similar to what you'd find at, say Wake Forest than at Ohio State. Again, I don't think ND to the ACC is happening, but that was the case that was made, and I think there is a degree of limited sense to it.

The people who were making this case were actually talking about full alignment with the ACC, not just non-football alignment. In that discussion, the BigEast, and especially the non-football BigEast, is obviously irrelevant.

Just so you're aware, my comment was not meant to be a reflection on you for presenting the thought.

I've been to South Bend and all of the ACC North Carolina schools. To me, South Bend might have some sort of similarities to Durham in the sense that the school is in a dump of a town. ND and Duke may be similar in their elitist mentalities as well. I just don't see the RCC shtick doing all that pleasantly in the SE. But that may just be me.
