The Big Ten must take a longer term view of any relationship with Notre Dame. I don't like the fact that Notre Dame is part of the Big Ten for rugby. They must not be allowed to pick and choose or have any special treatment. If they don't accept those terms, then let them pound sand and make sure that their attendance figures drop through the floor and their costs go through the roof by cutting them out of playing Big Ten teams.

“The Big Ten would have exposure in every TV home,” said one source. “It would also be a smart idea to follow the model of the most successful sports league in America.”

In my view, this is why you bring in Oregon and Washington. If you're a national brand, you bring in schools that increase national viewership. The nation would tune in to see Oregon play tOSU, or USC, or even ichigan and Penn State

Apparently with the current 16 teams the expected pot of TV money divided by 16 is greater than what the pot of TV money (for 18 teams with Oregon and Washington) divided by 18 would be, i.e. each of the current 16 teams would get less if the B1G admitted Oregon and Washington. It's all about the money.

I'm seeing that as well, but the fixation has been on the Seattle and Portland TV markets. With better weekly matchups, you increase the viewership in other markets.

If the Patriots are playing the Bucs, the nation watches. If Oregon is playing the Bucks, the nation will watch. It's the NFL model.

Rutgers and Northwestern may be big markets, but who cares outside of their fanbase?

Yeah I've been of the opinion you take them and figure out the rest later. But others not so much. Also some people think the B1G is worried about lawsuits if the deal the killing blow to the PAC so their might be some waiting on the PAC/Big XII to poach people so they can claim they didn't do it. They just picked them up after the fact

Are they also Big 10 in hockey?

Yeah, I'd kick their asses out of the B1G Rugby and Ice Hockey Conferences and let them play the ACC teams in those sports too; even though they might be 1 team conferences in the ACC...

I've had this conversation before, and someone bought up a good point: Rutgers may not excite very much of a fan base in 2020 or 2022, but the idea is that there are a lot of people in that market. And those people get to see Ohio State and Wisconsin and Nebraska and name other Big Ten team here. Even those blue uglies up north, I suppose. So the kids growing up in the houses in the NYC market grow up as fans of those teams, if not fans of Rutgers. It makes a little sense to me, I suppose. It's investing in the future fans - not so much buying today's fans.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to me. I live in the NYC area, and we got Buckeye games (and B1G Network) before Rutgers joined the B1G. It's not like Ohio State, scUM and Ped State are exotic schools here.

I'll defer to you, then, but I choose to believe smarter people than I am are making these decisions. There must be some good reason(s) for aiming to get these big market areas that reportedly don't have a large fanbase.

Just don't listen to Tim Brando he'd have you thinkthe B1G would do the ACC sweetheart Notre Dame deal despite turning them down on that for the last 20 years cause reasons

that move was made when it was worth massively more per subscriber if they were in the footprint. so all of the nyc ppl who got BTN without desiring it would pad the budgets of the entire league.
