Ok, So I am way behind on this expansion, and I have tried to read some of the posts, but there are so many that is a bunch of BS. So what is happening? Have they settled on expansion or are they still working on it. Need facts no BS please.

Here are your facts:

Dec. 15, 2009
The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) discussed the future of the Big Ten Conference at its winter meetings on Dec. 6 in Park Ridge, Illinois. The following statement is issued by the Big Ten office on behalf of the COP/C.

Penn State joined the Big Ten Conference in June of 1990 and its addition has been an unqualified success. In 1993, 1998 and 2003 the COP/C, in coordination with the commissioner's office, reviewed the issue of conference structure and expansion. The COP/C believes that the timing is right for the conference to once again conduct a thorough evaluation of options for conference structure and expansion. As a result, the commissioner was asked to provide recommendations for consideration by the COP/C over the next 12 to 18 months.

The COP/C understands that speculation about the conference is ongoing. The COP/C has asked the conference office to obtain, to the extent possible, information necessary to construct preliminary options and recommendations without engaging in formal discussions with leadership of other institutions. If and when such discussions become necessary the COP/C has instructed Commissioner James E. Delany to inform the Chair of the COP/C, Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon, and then to notify the commissioner of the affected conference(s). Only after these notices have occurred will the Big Ten engage in formal expansion discussions with other institutions. This process will allow the Big Ten to evaluate options, while respecting peer conferences and their member institutions. No action by the COP/C is expected in the near term. No interim statements will be made by the Big Ten or the COP/C until after the COP/C receives the commissioner's recommendations and the COP/C determines next steps, if any, in this area.

If you're behind on this topic; then how do you know what's bullshit and what isn't?

Move to Lawrence, KS and ask the author of the only publicized article.

Should make for a great "road trip" for the game in Rio. My Brazilian VISA is good for 2 1/2 more years too. The only problem will be Brazil's football is round and doesn't have "pointie ends".
I'm wondering what the "Brazilian" Mascot is going to look like...:paranoid:

You know, we don't HAVE to divide the conference based solely on geography, guys. See the ACC.

Saves you from having unbalanced divisions of a conference, like the Big 12 North/South have gone through.
OSU-UM are together to preserve the rivalry. MSU & PSU are logical additions to that division for other rivalries.

The next best teams:
4th. Wisc
5th. Iowa
6th. Illinois

Would all be in Texas' division, and Texas A&M would be comparable to Penn State imo (especially if they become the 2nd best team in their division instead of their current status as an inferior little bro to OU & Tex).

I also wonder if both UM & Penn State can be elite teams with this deep of a conference. If UM rebuilds and returns as a perennial top-10 team, I think that comes at the expense of Penn State.

Statement of Facts:

FACT: The Big Ten (11) is one of the premier athletic conferences in American and many teams would love to be a part of it.

FACT: The Big Ten (11) wants to add at least one (1) New team and perhaps as many as five (5) New teams in order to have a playoff.

FACT: Some people believe the Big Ten (11) is strictly a Midwestern conference and therefore shouldn't expand into the East Coast or South/Southwest.

FACT: There are several (more than one) criteria that the Big Ten (11) is looking for in a candidate for expansion.

FACT: First, the Big Ten (11) wants to increase viewership, and so would like to expand into major media markets. So, schools like Rutgers (Scarlet Knights) and Syracuse (Orangemen) may fit the bill (New York Market). So too would Texas (Longhorns), who would bring along several (more than one) markets (Austin, Dallas, Houston). For this reason, schools like Pittsburgh (Panthers) and Nebraska (Cornhuskers) don't make a lot of sense.

FACT: Second, the Big Ten (11) is also a pretty impressive collegiate consortium (CIC) that lands tons of research money ($$), which in turn improves the quality of the faculty and student bodies of membership schools. Because schools like West Virginia (Mountaineers) and Cincinnati (Bearcats) aren't quite up to snuff academically (not AAU members!), they aren't likely to be considered. These schools can pound sand! It's just like the corporate world!

FACT: Third, even though Texas and Notre Dame (Fighting Irish) are the gem candidates, the Big Ten (11) may want to go East to satisfy Penn State's (Nittany Lions') desire for a more natural rival (crybabies).

FACT: Texas may be more interested than some think because, despite the geographical challenges, the Big XII (12) may be on the ropes, with the PAC-10 looking to steal away Colorado (Buffaloes). Furthermore, admission into the Big Ten (11) could spell more money ($$$) for anyone that joins.

FACT: Other schools under consideration are Missouri (Tigers) and Notre Dame, though the latter still seems unlikely to give up its independence.

I hope these facts help.
