State Penn was never in the Big East.

Well, OK, technically no, but they played Syracuse, Pitt, Maryland and Rutgers damn near every year before and after there was a Big East. And as it turns out, they turned to the Big 10 when someone in the Big East blackballed them.

There's nothing to keep the Big 10 from playing after the 3rd Saturday, or even into December and there are many reasons to stay out of the CCG biz not the least of which are 1) the possibility of having to play a rematch. 2) the possibility of one division dominating the other over a long stretch of time. 3) Oklahoma - Kansas State repeats. 4) #2 in one division is stronger than #1 in the other but doesn't get to the CCG 5) Does nothing for the academic side of the student - athlete equation -- which probably explains why the SEC and Big 12 have it and the Pac 10 and Big 10 do not.

Frankly, this all seems to me to be a political exercise to get Notre Dame -- the only team that really fits the niche -- to shit or get off the pot.

Ntre Ame has already gotten off the pot as they have already said no.

a.) Did the rivalry mean any less during the 90's?
b.) You do realize they hold a 14 game lead on the series right?

Did the Buckeyes ever go 3-9 in the 90s? Did they ever finish in last place in the Big Ten? Did they ever lose to a I-AA school or a MAC school?

It doesn't matter who leads the series and by how many days - if scUM continues to lose more games than they win against non-Ohio State opponents it will do more damage to the rivalry than conference realignment would.

I'll add - I've been outspoken about rooting against scUM at every opportunity, despite what their lack of success means for the rivalry. I don't see a conflict there. My job is to hate them with every ounce of my being and to say they suck at every opportunity. Their job is to win, despite all of the terrible things I wish upon them. They're not holding up their end of the bargain right now.

OK, it's a snow day here so let me 'splain: I see all this talk of Texas and Pitt as political; approaches made to schools that could change the rules of the game for the entire Big 10 and ND. Texas especially seems to me to be political jockeying to try and force ND to do something -- go all in in the Big East or join the Big 10. With ND the Big 10 doesn't need Pitt or Texas and wouldn't need to split into divisions, add a CCG or worry about the East Coast market.

It's Presidents Day and there are more exciting threads to be reading, so I'll be brief...

While attempting to not disregard the absolute stupidity of Jim Delaney, Texas is BETTER than Ntre Ame.

Sure Ntre Ame might add some viewers in the NYC market, but NYC is a pro-sports town. Ord makes a better case for them than I do, but Texas, both academically and athletically is a better match for what the Big Ten (logically) is going for.

Why would the Big Ten go for Ntre Ame now? That isn't in their best interests, which is why Delaney is the wild card. Hell Ntre Ame isn't even a good football school anymore.

Now back to watching Coolidge rip Aaron Burr and Samuel Tilden a new one...

What scUM does in the other 11 games leading up to The Game means jack fucking shit. The Rivalry will always be The Rivalry. Fuck what the press says. Fuck what anyone else says. Losing to an 11-0 scUM team hurts just as bad as losing to a 3-8 one would. While scUM's traveling circus failure may currently cast a bleak shadow over the conference's reputation as whole, it does nothing to alter the absolute importantance of The Game.

what made the game The Game is the excellence that both teams brought to the field for decades, if Michigan and Ohio State weren't consistantly the best teams in the Big Ten and the country every single year then the rivalry wouldn't be what it is

acting like consistant mediocrity from either side over a long period of time won't deminish the rivalry is delusional

if either team was consistantly mediocre up to this point then the rivalry would be a shadow of what it is

you lose what made the game great (consistent excellence from both teams), and somehow it will still be just as great, I don't think so

I was at The Game in 2006 and I was at The Game in 2008

Michigan sucking diminishes the rivalry, that's not an opinion, that is a fact

If we're just talking about you and me and the teams, I couldn't agree more. No matter what happens the rest of my life, The Game will always be a big deal and I'll want the Buckeyes to beat those assholes no matter what.

I think we'd like to believe that the same holds true for people who don't have a stake in it, but I don't think that's really the case. There are plenty of people in this world who only care about that game one day a year, and that's who I'm referring to. That's what gets diminished when scUM sucks or when it's no longer for the Big Ten title quite as often.
