Big 10 Tournament @ TSUN thread

The Big 10 sure didn't fare too well in getting teams into baseball's version of the "big dance":

SEC - eight teams
Atlantic Coast and Big 12 - seven teams
Pacific-10 and Conference USA - four teams
Big 10 - one team (scUM)

NCAA baseball tournament field announced

ESPN.com news services

The field of 64 teams competing for the 2006 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship was announced Monday by the NCAA.
The national top eight seeds are Clemson (47-14), Rice (50-10), Texas (40-19), Alabama (41-19), Cal St. Fullerton (43-13), Nebraska (42-15), Georgia (41-19) and Georgia Tech (45-16).
The SEC leads all conferences in the number of teams in the championship field with eight, followed by the Atlantic Coast and Big 12 with seven each. The Pacific-10 and Conference USA have four teams each.
Twenty-nine of the 64 teams were not in the field last year, including Lehigh (automatic qualifier), UNC Asheville (automatic qualifier), Prairie View (automatic qualifier), San Francisco (at-large) and Sacred Heart (automatic qualifier), making the championship for the first time. Manhattan was last in the field in 1957, while St. Louis is in the field for the first time since 1966 and Ball State's last appearance was 1969.
Miami is in the field for the 34th consecutive year, extending its own record. Florida State is making its 29th straight appearance, second all-time. Other long consecutive streaks: Clemson (20), Cal St. Fullerton (15), Stanford (13) and Rice (12).
Of the 285 championship eligible Division I institutions which sponsor baseball, Rice has the most Division I wins with 49. Twenty-five other teams won at least 40 Division I contests and 24 are in the field. Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from June 2 to June 5. The 60th College World Series begins play June 16, at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.

They didn't even mention Big 10 Champ Michigan. Gotta toughen up that sched, and win those games! Scheduling Miami @ Coral Gables won't mean squat if we don't win. Having Florida and Mizzou on the sched this year was a good start.

The rpi is such a huge factor in determining who gets an at large..you need to boost your RPI by playing..and even losing to good opposition.

Its hard to schedule good mid week opponents during league play(although, Purdue, Mich, & Minny all played ND), but we can do it in fedruary & march.

Some examples of how our peers scheduled early in the year...

Minnesota went 4-9 vs the top 100 RPI in febuary and March
We went 1-3.... Despite the fact that we had a much higher winning % than Minny..the gophers had a higher RPi 87 vs 98. It pays to schedule good teams...

Minnesota 34-26 RPI 87
Ohio State 37-21 RPI 98

Purdue was 6-6 vs RPI top 100 in Feb & March..we had a Much better winning % than Purdue, but their strong early schedule kept their RPI close to ours despite our much better record and the fact that we won 4 of 5 against them

Purdue 31-27 RPI 104
Ohio State 37-21 RPI 98

We went 37-21 against the second weakest schedule in the B10(Indiana played the worst). If we had gone 37-21 against Minny, Purdue, or Michigans slate, we would have been in the hunt for an at large.

If the entire league would step up and play more quality opponents in..there wouldnt be such a drag on everyones RPI when league play starts. The beauty of of a strong early schedule is that you dont have to win those games to benefit...

B10 womens softball teams played difficult schedules early on..and it paid off..4 at large bids. We had 5 Softball teams ranked in the top 50 of SOS.
Baseball wise Minny, had the highest SOS..103. Ours was 166, and the best we have done in the past 10 years has been 108.

i am not saying we have to play the Miami's of the world, but we can play games vs UL Lafayette, Winthrop, Old Dominion,Florida International, ect..

Geography prevents us from playing strong mid week teams like the boys down south do, but we can at least make an effort to schedule better in the month of March.

Minny, purdue, and Michigan can do it..why cant we ?

Great point rhg. But I do have one honest question: when does it end? Why particularly, is playing a 10-4 Purdue team worse than playing a 10-4 Florida International? Who they play? Who the teams they play, play? As long as we schedule Div I schools I don't have a problem with it. Yes, Ohio State should not be afraid to play the Florida and West Coast schools, but unlike Football, it isn't as easy. A common start date would be a good start to evening the playing field.

Too bad there is no baseball NIT, the Buckeyes would be there :)

The reality of OSU baseball is that, unlike football and hoops, it's not going to be possible to get even half of the top-tier Ohio recruits that OSU wants. The top tier wants to play in the SEC, ACC, or Big 12. Georgia Tech, SC, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Alabama, Wake Forest, Kentucky, NCSU, Duke. All have signed top Ohio prospects in the last few years.

Add to that the fact that Todd is a lazy recruiter, refuses to recruit the Northeast Ohio area, and is content in getting mainly Columbus and lower-division kids, and you have a decent to great Big Ten team that has trouble competing against the elite teams. Todd has turned OSU into one of the Northern powers in college baseball, and he definitely deserves the chance to go out on his own terms, but don't be surprised to see some changes in the next couple years. I see his situation similar to Hellickson with wrestling. Very well respected nationally by his peers, had a long successful tenure, but is just getting maybe a little past his prime. Neither was hired by Gene Smith, so maybe the loyalty isn't there as much as it was under Geiger.

michigan canned their coach and brought in a young guy, PSU did the same. ND has a great coach and is consistently in the top 25. No reason OSU can't be. They just need a more energetic recruiter that doesn't ignore half the Ohio talent solely because of where they happen to live. Todd doesn't do much of the coaching as it is, he leaves it up to his assistants. Losing Bangtson to Akron was pretty big. He was a good coach from what I hear, and the players related well to him.

It looks like a situation more similar to O'Brien and Matta. O'Brien almost conceded Ohio BBall talent to "bigger" programs. Matta is raking them in. There is no excuse to lose Ohio talent on a regular basis to anyone, regardless what sport it is.

Cleve,

You make some good points about recruiting. We arent that attractive of an option when it comes to baseball, so we need a guy who goes that extra mile to get kids to come play ball. Todd is not really an "energetic recruiter" as you said....

I have a soft spot for Todd because of what he has meant to the program, but we could very well be left behind if things dont change on the recruiting front....

I think we had a good year considering all the weapons we lost from last years team, but i have been worrying a lot lately about what this team will look like after the '08 season..Coach Todd better get busy.

Oh I agree. I'm not all that disappointed with this season. Two freshmen in the weekend rotation, new 1B, etc. 2007 will be the year that Todd has no excuses. All the pitching should return. Bourquin would be a pretty big loss, but Todd should have been recruiting a replacement for awhile now. Stephen is replaceable, especially on the defensive side (again, if the recruiting has been up to par). Anything short of a Big Ten and/or tournament title with an NCAA appearance would be a huge disappointment next year.

You got that right!

Cleve, are you worried about losing Delucia to the draft? IMO, he gets picked, but not sure if he leaves us. I say he gets picked pretty late.

I'm not so sure Ronnie will get picked high enough..I think it depends on how easily scouts feel he can make the switch to new position. He is not a 3B imo.

I think i would stay another year if i were Mr Bourquin :wink2:

I have been wanting to ask everyone who they think plays SS.... As far as guys on the roster..I say Chris Macke will get the first look.

I am really high on Justin Miller..he may be the best defensive IF the Bucks have had in a long time. If Ronnie does leave us, i think he would make an excellent defensive 3B.
