The Big Ten ended its season with a loss late Saturday, with Purdue falling at Hawaii, 42-35. The loss isn't anything for the 8-5 Boilermakers to be embarrassed about. Hawaii's nine-game winning streak is tied for third in the country, behind only Ohio State's 19-game streak and the 12-game run of WAC leader Boise State. The loss is generally more of a blotch on the conference, that a team that tied for fourth, at 5-3 with Penn State, can't handle the No. 2 team in the Western Athletic Conference.
In Jeff Sagarin's conference ratings, the Big Ten is fourth, behind the SEC, Big East and Pac-10. When considering individual teams in Sagarin's most broad individual rankings, the Big Ten lands five teams in the top 40, while the Pac-10 has nine, the SEC has seven, and the ACC and Big 12 also have five.
For all the respect Ohio State and Michigan have earned with the talk of a title game rematch, the rest of the Big Ten takes away from what the Buckeyes and Wolverines have done. If Ohio State finishes as a 13-0 national champ, it'll be time to consider the Buckeyes among the all-time greats. When that happens, the weak eight of the Big Ten are going to knock down Ohio State in the eyes of a lot of people.
